@article{fdi:010063100, title = {{P}olar front around the {K}erguelen {I}slands : an up-to-date determination and associated circulation of surface/subsurface waters}, author = {{P}ark, {Y}. {H}. and {D}urand, {I}. and {K}estenare, {E}lodie and {R}ougier, {G}. and {Z}hou, {M}. and d'{O}vidio, {F}. and {C}otte, {C}. and {L}ee, {J}. {H}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he circulation of iron-rich shelf waters around the {K}erguelen {I}slands plays a crucial role for a climatically important, annually recurrent phytoplankton spring bloom over the sluggish shelf region and its downstream plume area along the {A}ntarctic circumpolar flow. {H}owever, there is a long-standing confusion about the {P}olar {F}ront ({PF}) in the {K}erguelen region due to diverse suggestions in the literature for its geographical location with an extreme difference over 10 degrees of latitude. {B}ased on abundant historical hydrographic data, the in situ hydrographic and current measurements during the 2011 {KEOPS}2 cruise, satellite chlorophyll images, and altimetry-derived surface velocity fields, we determine and validate an up-to-date location of the {PF} around the {K}erguelen {I}slands. {A}rtificial {L}agrangian particle trajectories computed from altimetric velocity time series are analyzed for the possible pathways and sources of different surface/subsurface waters advected into the chlorophyll bloom area east off the islands studied during the {KEOPS}2 cruise. {T}he {PF} location determined as the northernmost boundary of the {W}inter {W}ater colder than 2 degrees {C}, which is also associated with a band of strong currents, appears to be primarily controlled by topography. {T}he {PF} rounds the {K}erguelen {I}slands from the south to deflect northward along the eastern escarpment up to the northeastern corner of the {K}erguelen {P}lateau before making its southward retroflection. {I}t is shown that the major surface/subsurface waters found within the deep basin east of the {K}erguelen {I}slands originate from the shelf around the {H}eard {I}sland, rather than from the shallow shelf north of the {K}erguelen {I}slands.}, keywords = {{P}olar {F}ront ; {K}erguelen ; {S}outhern {O}cean ; {KERGUELEN} ; {ANTARCTIQUE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {G}eophysical {R}esearch : {O}ceans}, volume = {119}, numero = {10}, pages = {6575--6592}, ISSN = {2169-9275}, year = {2014}, DOI = {10.1002/2014jc010061}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010063100}, }
