@article{fdi:010062918, title = {{A}ssessing economic effects of a marine protected area on fishing households : a {T}hai case study}, author = {{W}eigel, {J}ean-{Y}ves and {M}orand, {P}ierre and {M}awongwai, {T}. and {N}o{\¨e}l, {J}.{F}. and {T}okrishna, {R}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}ome recommendations made by the {W}orld {P}arks {C}ongress in {D}urban (2003) underscore the need to consider the impacts of multi-purpose marine protected areas ({MPA}s) on resident or adjacent populations, and lead social and fisheries scientists to reconsider their approaches and methods regarding the assessment of economic effects of an {MPA}. {T}his paper contributes to this reconsideration by proposing an assessment method of microeconomic effects. {T}he approach is the comparison of fishing households’ economic situation in {C}humphon {P}rovince ({T}hailand) at a given time based on their location in relation to a marine protected area: within or adjacent to {C}humphon {A}rchipelago {M}arine {N}ational {P}ark vs. remote from it. {W}e address three economic dimensions: the profitability of household activities, the income-distributional effects among households and the household vulnerability. {T}his assessment requires the calculation of five indicators : the net income, the net profit margin, the {G}ini coefficient and the {H}erfindahl index, and {B}ene's vulnerability index. {F}rom a dataset made up of 123 fishing households surveyed twice a year, the main results show higher incomes and less economic vulnerability for households located within or adjacent to the {MPA}, and a more inegalitarian income distribution among households located remote from the {MPA}. {S}o, the households located within or adjacent to the {MPA} have more security, can stay focused on the most profitable fishing activities and not have to diversify outside of the fishing sector. {I}n an environment where commercial small-scale fishing was already highly developed, setting up an {MPA} could have the effect of sustaining an efficient, specialised professional set-up for fishing households in the area concerned. {W}ith respect to a policy to establish {MPA}s in keeping with the {D}urban recommendations, this study shows that a thorough analysis of profitability, income distribution and economic vulnerability should help to identify who the winners and losers might be, which could improve the targeting of mitigation and compensation measures.}, keywords = {{MILIEU} {MARIN} ; {ARCHIPEL} ; {PROTECTION} {DE} {L}'{ECOSYSTEME} ; {PARC} {NATIONAL} ; {PECHE} {ARTISANALE} ; {PECHEUR} ; {ECONOMIE} {DES} {PECHES} ; {PROFIT} ; {INDICATEUR} {SOCIOECONOMIQUE} ; {ENQUETE} ; {AIRE} {MARINE} {PROTEGEE} ; {THAILANDE} ; {CHUMPHON}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{F}isheries {R}esearch}, volume = {161}, numero = {}, pages = {64--76}, ISSN = {0165-7836}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.1016/j.fishres.2014.06.012}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010062918}, }
