  abstract = {{U}ntil coral molecular phylogenies were published, the genus {P}lesiastrea was traditionally part of the family {F}aviidae and considered by several authors to be closely related to the genus {M}ontastraea. {H}owever, genetic data has shown that {P}lesiastrea versipora, the genus type species, is evolutionarily distinct within the {R}obust clade of the {S}cleractinia and does not belong to the large clade grouping most representatives of the families {F}aviidae, including {M}ontastraea, {M}ussidae, {M}erulinidae. {T}rachyphylliidae, and {P}ectiniidae. {I}nstead, {P}. versipora is closely related to non reef-dwelling taxa currently ascribed to the {O}culinidae ({C}yathelia axillaris) and {C}aryophylliidae ({T}rochocyathus efateensis). {H}owever, no discussion on the morphologic features of {P}. versipora compared to other taxa has been published yet. {M}oreover, no information is available about the phylogenetic placement of {P}lesiastrea devantieri, the only other species in the genus. {T}he phylogeny of both {P}lesiastrea species was addressed through molecular analyses ({COI} and r{DNA}) and morphological analysis. {M}orphological differences between the two species included number of septa, cycles of vertical structures in front of the septa and septal micromorphology. {O}n the basis of these data and nuclear and mitochondrial markers. {P}. devantieri belongs to the {F}aviidae-{M}erulinidae-{P}ectiniidae-{T}rachyphylliidae clade ({C}lade {XVII} sensu {F}ukami et al., 2008) and is most closely related to {G}oniastrea aspera and {G}. palauensis. {T}he type species of the genus {G}oniastrea, {G}. retiformis, however, is not closely related to either {G}. aspera and {G}. palauensis, or to {P}. devantieri. {T}axonomic implications of these findings and morphologic affinities between the two species and closely related taxa are discussed.},
