@article{fdi:010062698, title = {{F}rom capsules to nutlets-phylogenetic relationships in the {B}oraginales}, author = {{W}eigend, {M}. and {L}uebert, {F}. and {G}ottschling, {M}. and {C}ouvreur, {T}homas and {H}ilger, {H}. {H}. and {M}iller, {J}. {S}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{M}ultiple family-level subdivisions of {B}oraginales have been proposed in the past. {T}he relationships of several constituent genera have been enigmatic, including {C}odon ({C}odonaceae), {H}oplestigma ({H}oplestigmataceae), {P}holisma ({L}ennoaceae), {V}ahlia ({V}ahliaceae), and {W}ellstedia ({W}ellstediaceae), all of which are included in the present study. {W}e present a molecular analysis with four chloroplast loci, including 89 ingroup taxa and a broad outgroup sampling in the asterids. {T}he genus {V}ahlia is excluded from {B}oraginales and appears to represent an early branching lineage of {L}amiales. {T}he study provides a well supported topology for the relationships within {B}oraginales, including all of the genera with previously unclear relationships. {W}ithin {B}oraginales, two major clades are recognized, with "herbaceaous" {B}oraginales {I} resolved as [{C}odonaceae,[{W}ellstediaceae,[{B}oraginaceae]]] and "woody" {B}oraginales {II} resolved as [{H}ydrophyllaceae {I},[{H}ydrophyllaceae {II},[{H}eliotropiaceae,[{C}ordiaceae, [{E}hretiaceae, {L}ennoaceae]]]]. {A} close relationship between {E}hretiaceae and {L}ennoaceae is well supported, but the exact placement of {L}ennoaceae remains unresolved. {T}he {C}ordiaceae lineage includes the monotypic genus {C}oldenia and the aberrant western and central {A}frican genus {H}oplestigma. {W}oody {B}oraginales {II} are retrieved in two highly supported clades. {H}ydrophyllaceae are retrieved in two separate clades, but with poor support. {T}here appear to be clear morphological progressions in vegetative, floral, and fruit morphology in both major {B}oraginales lineages. {T}hus capsular fruits are found in the first branching lineages of both clades, whereas reduced seed numbers in indehiscent fruits predominate in the more derived phylogenetic positions. {B}ased on these results, we advocate the recognition of eight morphologically well defined clades in the order, namely {B}oraginaceae s.str., {C}odonaceae, {C}ordiaceae (incl. {C}oldenia and {H}oplestigmataceae), {E}hretiaceae (incl. {L}ennoaceae), {H}eliotropiaceae, {H}ydrophyllaceae {I} and {H}ydrophyllaceae {II}, and {W}ellstediaceae.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}ladistics}, volume = {30}, numero = {5}, pages = {508--518}, ISSN = {0748-3007}, year = {2014}, DOI = {10.1111/cla.12061}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010062698}, }
