@article{fdi:010062642, title = {{M}arine turtle interaction with purse-seine fishery in the {A}tlantic and {I}ndian oceans : lessons for management}, author = {{B}ourjea, {J}. and {C}lermont, {S}. and {D}elgado, {A}. and {M}urua, {H}. and {R}uiz, {J}. and {C}iccione, {S}. and {C}havance, {P}ierre}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ycatch of endangered marine turtles is a growing issue for the management of all fisheries, including the oceanic purse-seine fishery. {T}he aim of this study was to assess the spatial and temporal variation in bycatch rates of these species in the entire {E}uropean purse-seine fishery operating in the {A}tlantic and {I}ndian oceans. {T}he study was based on data collected through observer programs from 1995 to 2011. {D}uring that period, a total of 15 913 fishing sets were observed, including 6 515 on {D}rifting {F}ish {A}ggregating {D}evices ({DFAD}s) and 9 398 on free swimming schools, representing a global coverage of 10.3% and 5.1% of the total fishing activity in the {A}tlantic and {I}ndian {O}cean, respectively. {M}oreover, from 2003 to 2011, 14 124 specific observations were carried out on {DFAD}s to check turtle entanglement in the net covering {DFAD}s. {W}e found that the purse-seine fishery has a very low impact on marine turtles. {W}e estimated that the annual number of individuals incidentally captured was 218 ({SD} = 150) and 250 ({SD} = 157) in the {A}tlantic and {I}ndian {O}cean, respectively, with more than 75% being released alive. {T}he present study also investigated the impact of {DFAD}s; which is considered a key conservation issue for this fishery. {D}rifting objects may play a key role in aggregating juveniles of marine turtles, implying the need for improving their construction to avoid entanglement (e.g. avoiding nets in the structure); however, based on our study it is not the main source of incidental captures of marine turtles in this fishery.}, keywords = {{B}ycatch ; {M}arine turtle ; {F}ishery impacts ; {F}ishery management ; {A}tlantic {O}cean ; {I}ndian {O}cean ; {ATLANTIQUE} ; {OCEAN} {INDIEN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{B}iological {C}onservation}, volume = {178}, numero = {}, pages = {74--87}, ISSN = {0006-3207}, year = {2014}, DOI = {10.1016/j.biocon.2014.06.020}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010062642}, }
