@article{fdi:010062481, title = {{E}ocene and {O}ligocene basins and ridges of the {C}oral {S}ea-{N}ew {C}aledonia region : tectonic link between {M}elanesia, {F}iji, and {Z}ealandia}, author = {{M}ortimer, {N}. and {G}ans, {P}. {B}. and {P}alin, {J}. {M}. and {H}erzer, {R}. {H}. and {P}elletier, {B}ernard and {M}onzier, {M}ichel}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}his paper presents 34 geochemical analyses, 24 {A}r-{A}r ages, and two {U}-{P}b ages of igneous rocks from the back-arc basins and submarine ridges in the {C}oral {S}ea-{N}ew {C}aledonia region. {T}he {D}'{E}ntrecasteaux {R}idge is a composite structural feature. {P}rimitive arc tholeiites of {E}ocene age (34-56 {M}a) are present along a 200 km length of the ridge and arguably were part of the initial line of subduction inception between {F}iji and the {M}arianas; substantial {E}ocene arc edifices are only evident at the eastern end where {B}ougainville {G}uyot andesite breccias are dated at 40 +/- 2 {M}a. {T}he {S}outh {R}ennell {T}rough is confidently identified as a 28-29 {M}a (early {O}ligocene) fossil spreading ridge, and hence, the flanking {S}anta {C}ruz and {D}'{E}ntrecasteaux basins belong in the group of {SW} {P}acific {E}ocene-{E}arly {M}iocene back-arc basins that include the {S}olomon {S}ea, {N}orth {L}oyalty, and {S}outh {F}iji basins. {T}he rate and duration of spreading in the {N}orth {L}oyalty {B}asin is revised to 43 mm/yr between 28 and 44 {M}a, longer and faster than previously recognized. {T}he direction of its opening was to the southeast, that is, parallel to the continent-ocean boundary and perpendicular to the direction of coeval {N}ew {C}aledonia ophiolite emplacement. {M}edium-and high-{K} alkaline lavas of 23-25 {M}a (late {O}ligocene) age on the northern {N}orfolk {R}idge are an additional magmatic response to {P}acific trench rollback.}, keywords = {{NOUVELLE} {CALEDONIE} ; {PACIFIQUE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{T}ectonics}, volume = {33}, numero = {7}, pages = {1386--1407}, ISSN = {0278-7407}, year = {2014}, DOI = {10.1002/2014tc003598}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010062481}, }
