@article{fdi:010062407, title = {{G}enetic structure in the {A}mazonian catfish {B}rachyplatystoma rousseauxii : influence of life history strategies}, author = {{C}arvajal-{V}allejos, {F}. {M}. and {D}uponchelle, {F}abrice and {D}esmarais, {E}. and {C}erqueira, {F}. and {Q}u{\'e}rouil, {S}ophie and {N}unez {R}odriguez, {J}esus and {G}arcia, {C}. and {R}enno, {J}ean-{F}ran{\c{c}}ois}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {D}orado or {P}lateado ({G}ilded catfish) {B}rachyplatystoma rousseauxii ({P}imelodidae, {S}iluriformes) is a commercially valuable migratory catfish performing the largest migration in freshwaters: from the {A}mazonian headwaters in the {A}ndean foothills (breeding area) to the {A}mazon estuary (nursery area). {I}n spite of its importance to inform management and conservation efforts, the genetic variability of this species has only recently begun to be studied. {T}he aim of the present work was to determine the population genetic structure of {B}. rousseauxii in two regions: the {U}pper {M}adera {B}asin (five locations in the {B}olivian {A}mazon) and the {W}estern {A}mazon {B}asin (one regional sample from the {U}yucali-{N}apo-{M}araon-{A}mazon basin, {P}eru). {L}ength polymorphism at nine microsatellite loci (284 individuals) was used to determine genetic variability and to identify the most probable panmictic units (using a {B}ayesian approach), after a significant departure from {H}ardy-{W}einberg equilibrium was observed in the overall dataset ({W}estern {A}mazon + {U}pper {M}adera). {B}ayesian analyses revealed at least three clusters in admixture in the five locations sampled in the {B}olivian {A}mazon, whereas only two of these clusters were observed in the {W}estern {A}mazon. {C}onsidering the migratory behaviour of {B}. rousseauxii, different life history strategies, including homing, are proposed to explain the cluster distribution. {O}ur results are discussed in the light of the numerous threats to the species survival in the {M}adera basin, in particular dam and reservoir construction.}, keywords = {{B}olivia ; {M}adera {R}iver ; {P}opulation structure ; {M}icrosatellites ; {S}iluriformes ; {P}imelodidae ; {BOLIVIE} ; {PEROU} ; {AMAZONE} {BASSIN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{G}enetica}, volume = {142}, numero = {4}, pages = {323--336}, ISSN = {0016-6707}, year = {2014}, DOI = {10.1007/s10709-014-9777-2}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010062407}, }
