@article{fdi:010062396, title = {{I}nterannual variability of sea surface temperature and circulation in the tropical western {I}ndian {O}cean}, author = {{M}anyilizu, {M}. and {D}ufois, {F}. and {P}enven, {P}ierrick and {R}eason, {C}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A} regional ocean model was used to study interannual variations in the {T}anzanian shelf region and offshore in the tropical western {I}ndian {O}cean for the period 1980-2007. {T}he model was forced with surface winds and heat fluxes from the {N}ational {C}enters for {E}nvironmental {P}rediction ({NCEP}) reanalysis, and its initial and lateral boundary conditions were derived from the {S}imple {O}cean {D}ata {A}ssimilation ({SODA}). {T}he weakest interannual sea surface temperature ({SST}) variations occurred in the coastal waters off {T}anzania, where there was a strong correlation with waters to the north of {M}adagascar. {T}he coastal waters were dominated by variability at a period of about 5 y. {T}he strongest interannual {SST} variations occurred offshore, being dominated by two periods, one at about 2.7 y and the other at about 5 y. {T}he variability of the region seemed to be linked to {E}l {N}ino-{S}outhern {O}scillation ({ENSO}) and {I}ndian {O}cean {D}ipole ({IOD}) events that induced changes in the thermocline and surface heat fluxes in the region. {L}ocal surface heat flux exchanges driven by the anomalous shortwave radiation dominated the interannual {SST} variability in the {T}anzanian shelf region, with some contribution by the advection of heat anomalies from the {N}orth-{E}ast {M}adagascar {C}urrent. {F}arther offshore, the interannual variability of the {SST} was dominated by the thermocline variations induced by local {E}kman pumping from local wind stress curl and by remote forcing from large-scale climate modes.}, keywords = {offshore ; {T}anzanian shelf ; {OCEAN} {INDIEN} ; {MADAGASCAR}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}frican {J}ournal of {M}arine {S}cience}, volume = {36}, numero = {2}, pages = {233--252}, ISSN = {1814-232{X}}, year = {2014}, DOI = {10.2989/1814232x.2014.928651}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010062396}, }
