@article{fdi:010062359, title = {{D}iversity of {A}nopheles mosquitoes in {B}inh {P}huoc and {D}ak {N}ong {P}rovinces of {V}ietnam and their relation to disease}, author = {{N}go, {C}. {T}. and {D}ubois, {G}. and {S}inou, {V}. and {P}arzy, {D}. and {L}e, {H}. {Q}. and {H}arbach, {R}. {E}. and {M}anguin, {S}ylvie}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground: {H}uman malaria is still a burden in {D}ak {N}ong and {B}inh {P}huoc {P}rovinces in south-central {V}ietnam that border {C}ambodia. {S}everal {A}nopheles species that transmit human malarial {P}lasmodium may also transmit {W}uchereria bancrofti, the nematode that causes {B}ancroftian lymphatic filariasis. {T}he objective of this study was to investigate the role of {A}nopheles species in the transmission of these two pathogens in the two highly malaria endemic provinces of {V}ietnam. {M}ethods: {A}nopheles mosquitoes were collected in {D}ak {N}ong and {B}inh {P}huoc {P}rovinces in {N}ovember and {D}ecember of 2010 and 2011. {H}uman landing catches, paired collections on human and buffalo, and resting captures were made with mouth aspirators. {C}ollections were also made with light traps. {M}orphological and {PCR}-based methods were used to identify the species. {R}eal-time {PCR} was used to detect {P}lasmodium species and {W}. bancrofti in individual mosquitoes. {R}esults: {T}wenty-four {A}nopheles species were identified among 797 captured mosquitoes. {A}nopheles dirus was found in both provinces and was the predominant species in {B}inh {P}huoc {P}rovince; {A}n. maculatus was the most prevalent species in {D}ak {N}ong {P}rovince. {A}nopheles minimus was collected only in {B}inh {P}huoc {P}rovince. {S}ome specimens of {A}n. minimus and {A}n. pampanai were misidentified based on morphology. {F}our specimens of {A}n. scanloni were identified, and this is the first report of this species of the {D}irus {C}omplex in {V}ietnam. {T}wo females, one {A}n. dirus and one {A}n. pampanai, collected in {B}inh {P}huoc {P}rovince were infected with {P}. vivax, for an overall infection rate of 0.41% (2/486): 0.28% for {A}n. dirus (1/361) and 20% for {A}n. pampanai (1/5). {N}o mosquitoes were found to be infected with {P}. falciparum, {P}. knowlesi or {W}. bancrofti in either province. {C}onclusion: {A} diversity of {A}nopheles species occurs in {D}ak {N}ong and {B}inh {P}huoc {P}rovinces of {V}ietnam, several of which are considered to be actual and potential vectors of malarial protozoa and microfilariae. {I}t is highly likely that two of the species, {A}n. dirus and {A}n. pampanai, are active in malaria transmission based on the detection of {P}. vivax in females of these species. {T}his is the first report of {A}n. scanloni in {V}ietnam.}, keywords = {{P}lasmodium ; {W}uchereria bancrofti ; {A}nopheles ; {V}ietnam ; {R}eal-time {PCR} ; {VIET} {NAM}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}arasites and {V}ectors}, volume = {7}, numero = {}, pages = {art. 316}, ISSN = {1756-3305}, year = {2014}, DOI = {10.1186/1756-3305-7-316}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010062359}, }
