@article{fdi:010062351, title = {{S}ediment transport trends from a tropical {P}acific lagoon as indicated by {H}omotrema rubra taphonomy : {W}allis {I}sland, {P}olynesia}, author = {{P}ilarczyk, {J}. {E}. and {G}off, {J}. and {M}ountjoy, {J}. and {L}amarche, {G}eoffroy and {P}elletier, {B}ernard and {H}orton, {B}. {P}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he assessment of sediment transport pathways in carbonate settings is complicated by ecologically sourced sediment. {T}racers such as foraminifera have previously been used in these settings to describe the movement of coastal sediments on spatial and temporal scales where traditional grain size methods have limited use. {T}he present study builds on the foraminifera-based tracer method by using {H}omotrema rubra, a foraminifer with an attached life habit (i.e., defined provenance in the reef) to document modern sediment transport trends at {W}allis {I}sland, a tropical {P}acific lagoon. {A}t {W}allis {I}sland, {H}omotrema taphonomic results discriminated amongst modern reef, lagoon, and island (beach) samples. {R}eef samples contained high concentrations of fragments that were large (>250 mu m) and exceptionally- to well-preserved (e.g., intact chambers, red color, angularity). {I}n general, concentrations and degree of taphonomic alteration decreased with distance landward from the reef; lagoon samples were characterized by lower concentrations of {H}omotrema that were smaller in size and less preserved (e.g., pink in color, no chamber structure, rounding of edges). {A}t the greatest distance from the reef, island (beach) samples contained the lowest concentrations of {H}omotrema fragments that were small, well rounded and bleached. {I}n this regard, {H}omotrema taphonomy is a useful indicator of the direction and forcing of sediment transport and will therefore be useful in detecting overwash deposits in tropical settings, where distinguishing event deposits from surrounding sediment is problematic.}, keywords = {{H}omotrema ; {T}aphonomy ; {C}arbonate reef ; {O}verwash ; {S}torm ; {T}sunami ; {W}allis {I}sland ; {PACIFIQUE} ; {WALLIS} {ET} {FUTUNA}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{M}arine {M}icropaleontology}, volume = {109}, numero = {}, pages = {21--29}, ISSN = {0377-8398}, year = {2014}, DOI = {10.1016/j.marmicro.2014.03.004}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010062351}, }
