@article{fdi:010062315, title = {{P}opulation typing of the causal agent of cassava bacterial blight in the {E}astern {P}lains of {C}olombia using two types of molecular markers}, author = {{T}rujillo, {C}. {A}. and {A}rias-{R}ojas, {N}. and {P}oulin, {L}ucie and {M}edina, {C}. {A}. and {T}apiero, {A}. and {R}estrepo, {S}. and {K}oebnik, {R}alf and {B}ernal, {A}. {J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground: {M}olecular typing of pathogen populations is an important tool for the development of effective strategies for disease control. {D}iverse molecular markers have been used to characterize populations of {X}anthomonas axonopodis pv. manihotis ({X}am), the main bacterial pathogen of cassava. {R}ecently, diversity and population dynamics of {X}am in the {C}olombian {C}aribbean coast were estimated using {AFLP}s, where populations were found to be dynamic, diverse and with haplotypes unstable across time. {A}iming to examine the current state of pathogen populations located in the {C}olombian {E}astern {P}lains, we also used {AFLP} markers and we evaluated the usefulness of {V}ariable {N}umber {T}andem {R}epeats ({VNTR}s) as new molecular markers for the study of {X}am populations. {R}esults: {T}he population analyses showed that {AFLP} and {VNTR} provide a detailed and congruent description of {X}am populations from the {C}olombian {E}astern {P}lains. {T}hese two typing strategies clearly separated strains from the {C}olombian {E}astern {P}lains into distinct populations probably because of geographical distance. {A}lthough the majority of analyses were congruent between typing markers, fewer {VNTR}s were needed to detect a higher number of genetic populations of the pathogen as well as a higher genetic flow among sampled locations than those detected by {AFLP}s. {C}onclusions: {T}his study shows the advantages of {VNTR}s over {AFLP}s in the surveillance of pathogen populations and suggests the implementation of {VNTR}s in studies that involve large numbers of {X}am isolates in order to obtain a more detailed overview of the pathogen to improve the strategies for disease control.}, keywords = {{X}anthomonas axonopodis pv. manihotis ; {P}opulation dynamics ; {M}olecular markers ; {P}lant pathology ; {COLOMBIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{B}mc {M}icrobiology}, volume = {14}, numero = {}, pages = {art. 161}, ISSN = {1471-2180}, year = {2014}, DOI = {10.1186/1471-2180-14-161}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010062315}, }
