@article{fdi:010062285, title = {{A}ir-sea {CO}2 fluxes above the stratified oxygen minimum zone in the coastal region off {M}exico}, author = {{F}ranco, {A}. {C}. and {H}ernandez-{A}yon, {J}. {M}. and {B}eier, {E}. and {G}arcon, {V}. and {M}aske, {H}. and {P}aulmier, {A}ur{\'e}lien and {F}arber-{L}orda, {J}. and {C}astro, {R}. and {S}osa-{A}valos, {R}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{O}xygen minimum zones ({OMZ}s) are important sources of {CO}2 to the atmosphere when physical forces bring subsurface water with high dissolved inorganic carbon ({DIC}) to the surface. {T}his study examines, for the first time, the influence of the {OMZ} of the coastal {N}orth {E}astern {T}ropical {P}acific off {M}exico on surface {CO}2 fluxes. {W}e use variations in the oxycline depth and subsurface water masses to discern physical oceanographic influences. {D}uring two cruises, in {N}ovember 2009 and {A}ugust 2010, {DIC} and total alkalinity ({TA}) measurements were used to estimate p{CO}2 and air-sea {CO}2 fluxes. {A}t the {OMZ} layer, {S}ubtropical {S}ubsurface {W}ater ({S}t{S}s{W}) was found to have high p{CO}2 values (1290 +/- 70 atm). {D}ue to strong vertical stratification, however, the relationship between p{CO}2 at the air-sea interface and the oxycline/{S}t{S}s{W} upper limit depth was weak. {D}uring {N}ovember, the region was a weak source of {CO}2 to the atmosphere (up to 2.5 mmol {C} m-2 d-1), while during {A}ugust a range of values were observed between -4.4 and 3.3 mmol {C} m-2 d-1). {S}trong stratification (>1200 {J} m-3) prevented subsurface mixing of water from the {OMZ} to the upper layer; particularly in {N}ovember 2009 which was during an {E}l {N}ino event. {R}esults suggest that advection of surface water masses, reinforced by strong vertical stratification, controlled surface p{CO}2, and air-sea {CO}2 fluxes.}, keywords = {air-sea {CO}2 flux ; hypoxic environments ; coastal processes ; equatorial ; oceanography ; {E}astern {T}ropical {P}acific ; {MEXIQUE} ; {PACIFIQUE} ; {ZONE} {TROPICALE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {G}eophysical {R}esearch.{O}ceans}, volume = {119}, numero = {5}, pages = {2923--2937}, ISSN = {2169-9275}, year = {2014}, DOI = {10.1002/2013jc009337}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010062285}, }
