@article{fdi:010062246, title = {{R}ole of fronts in the formation of {A}rabian {S}ea barrier layers during summer monsoon}, author = {{M}ontegut, {C}. {D}. and {D}urand, {F}abien and {B}ourdalle-{B}adie, {R}. and {B}lanke, {B}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he barrier layer ({BL}) - a salinity stratification embedded in the upper warm layer - is a common feature of the tropical oceans. {I}n the northern {I}ndian {O}cean, it has the potential to significantly alter the air-sea interactions. {I}n the present paper, we investigate the spatio-temporal structure of {BL} in the {A}rabian {S}ea during summer monsoon. {T}his season is indeed a key component of the {A}sian climate. {B}ased on a comprehensive dataset of {C}onductivity-{T}emperature-{D}epth ({CTD}) and {A}rgo in situ hydrographic profiles, we find that a {BL} exists in the central {A}rabian {S}ea during summer. {H}owever, it is highly heterogeneous in space, and intermittent, with scales of about similar to 100 km or less and a couple of weeks. {T}he {BL} patterns appear to be closely associated to the salinity front separating two water masses ({A}rabian {S}ea {H}igh {S}alinity {W}ater in the {N}orthern and {E}astern part of the basin, fresher {B}ay of {B}engal {W}ater to the south and to the west). {A}n ocean general circulation model is used to infer the formation mechanism of the {BL}. {I}t appears that thick (more than 40 m) {BL} patterns are formed at the salinity front by subduction of the saltier water mass under the fresher one in an area of relatively uniform temperature. {T}hose thick {BL} events, with variable position and timing, result in a broader envelope of thinner {BL} in climatological conditions. {H}owever, the individual patterns of {BL} are probably too much short-lived to significantly affect the monsoonal air-sea interactions.}, keywords = {{B}arrier layer ; {A}rabian {S}ea ; {S}ummer monsoon ; {ARGO} ; {ASHSW} ; {OCEAN} {INDIEN} ; {ARABIE} {MER}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{O}cean {D}ynamics}, volume = {64}, numero = {6}, pages = {809--822}, ISSN = {1616-7341}, year = {2014}, DOI = {10.1007/s10236-014-0716-7}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010062246}, }
