@article{fdi:010062238, title = {{W}as the 2009 flood the most hazardous or the largest ever recorded in the {A}mazon ?}, author = {{F}ilizola, {N}. and {L}atrubesse, {E}. {M}. and {F}raizy, {P}ascal and {S}ouza, {R}. and {G}uimaraes, {V}. and {G}uyot, {J}ean-{L}oup}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{F}loods are fundamental components of {A}mazon nature and culture. {T}he large flood of 2009, however, opened a new perspective on hazards and disasters in the {A}mazon basin. {M}ore than 238,000 residents from 38 municipalities were affected by floods along the {A}mazon {R}iver and lower reaches of its tributaries. {N}ever before has a flood in the {A}mazon produced such a dramatic effect on the local population. {T}he magnitude of the disaster suggested it was the largest recorded {A}mazon flood since the beginning of measurements in 1928 at {O}bidos and that it could represent the largest recorded flood on {E}arth. {A} complex combination of atmospheric and hydrologic factors made the 2009 {A}mazon flood the most hazardous. {I}t was the result of large scale and regional climatic events, non-typical mechanisms of flood transmission generating complex inter-relations in time and space between the main system and the tributaries, and recent urban growth of riverine cities without adequate planning. {O}ur measurements at {O}bidos, however, indicate that the 2009 flood was the highest recorded {A}mazon stage, but most likely not the largest water discharge. {W}e propose as well that the magnitude of the {A}mazon floods at {O}bidos has been overestimated for decades and that the available values of flood discharge have been a source of error for a multidisciplinary set of scientists developing climate and environmental modeling.}, keywords = {{A}mazon {R}iver ; {F}lood ; {H}azards ; {O}bidos ; 2009 ; {AMAZONE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{G}eomorphology}, volume = {215}, numero = {{SI}}, pages = {99--105}, ISSN = {0169-555{X}}, year = {2014}, DOI = {10.1016/j.geomorph.2013.05.028}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010062238}, }
