@article{fdi:010061950, title = {{L}ipid intake in children under 3 years of age in {F}rance. {A} position paper by the {C}ommittee on {N}utrition of the {F}rench {S}ociety of {P}aediatrics}, author = {{B}riend, {A}ndr{\'e} and {L}egrand, {P}. and {B}ocquet, {A}. and {G}irardet, {J}. {P}. and {B}resson, {J}. {L}. and {C}houraqui, {J}. {P}. and {D}armaun, {D}. and {D}upont, {C}. and {F}relut, {M}. {L}. and {G}oulet, {O}. and {H}ankard, {R}. and {R}ieu, {D}. and {S}imeoni, {U}. and {T}urck, {D}. and {V}idailhet, {M}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{L}ipids are an important source of energy for young children and play a major role in the development and functioning of nervous tissue. {E}ssential fatty acids and their long-chain derivatives also fulfill multiple metabolic functions and play a role in the regulation of numerous genes. {T}he {F}ood and {A}griculture {O}rganization of the {U}nited {N}ations ({FAO}), the {W}orld {H}ealth {O}rganization ({WHO}), and the {F}rench {A}gency for {F}ood, {E}nvironmental and {O}ccupational {H}ealth & {S}afety ({A}gence nationale de securite sanitaire de rahmentation, de l'environnement et du travail [{ANSES}]) have recently recommended a minimum daily intake in preformed long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids ({LC}-{PUFA}s): arachidonic acid ({ARA}), eicosapentaenoic acid ({EPA}), and docosahexaenoic acid ({DHA}). {M}other's milk remains the only reference, but the large variability in its {DHA} content does not guarantee that breastfed children receive an optimal {DHA} intake if the mother's intake is insufficient. {F}or children fed with infant formulas, {ARA} and {DHA} intake is often below the recommended intake because only one-third of infant formulas available on the market in {F}rance are enriched in {LC}-{PUFA}s. {F}or all children, linoleic acid ({LA}) intake is on average higher than the minimal recommended values. {T}he consequences of these differences between intake and recommended values are uncertain. {A} cautious attitude is to come close to the current recommendations and to advise sufficient consumption of {DHA} in breastfeeding women. {F}or bottle-fed children, infant formulas enriched in {LC}-{PUFA}s and with moderate levels of {LA} should be preferred. {LC}-{PUFA}-rich fish should be consumed during breastfeeding, and adapted vegetable oils when complementary foods are introduced.}, keywords = {{FRANCE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}rchives de {P}{\'e}diatrie}, volume = {21}, numero = {4}, pages = {424--438}, ISSN = {0929-693{X}}, year = {2014}, DOI = {10.1016/j.arcped.2013.12.026}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010061950}, }
