@article{fdi:010061932, title = {{M}enopause and metabolic syndrome in {T}unisian women}, author = {{B}en {A}li, {S}. and {B}elfki-{B}enali, {H}. and {A}ounallah-{S}khiri, {H}. and {T}raissac, {P}ierre and {M}aire, {B}ernard and {D}elpeuch, {F}rancis and {A}chour, {N}. and {B}en {R}omdhane, {H}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{O}bjectives. {T}his study aimed to evaluate the effect of menopausal status on the risk of metabolic syndrome ({M}et{S}) in {T}unisian women. {M}ethods. {W}e analyzed a total of 2680 women aged between 35 and 70 years. {B}lood pressure, anthropometric indices, fasting glucose, and lipid profile were measured. {T}he {M}et{S} was assessed by the modified {NCEP}-{ATPIII} definition. {R}esults. {T}he mean values of waist circumference, blood pressure, plasma lipids, and fasting glucose were significantly higher in postmenopausal than in premenopausal women, a difference that was no longer present when adjusting for age. {E}xcept for hypertriglyceridaemia, the frequency of central obesity, hyperglycemia, high blood pressure, and high total cholesterol was significantly higher in postmenopausal than in premenopausal women. {A}fter adjusting for age, the significance persisted only for hyperglycemia. {T}he overall prevalence of {M}et{S} was 35.9%, higher in postmenopausal (45.7% versus 25.6%) than in premenopausal women. {A} binary logistic regression analysis showed that menopause was independently associated with {M}et{S} ({OR} = 1.41, 95% {CI} 1.10-1.82) after adjusting for age, residence area, marital status, family history of cardiovascular disease, education level, and occupation. {C}onclusions. {T}he present study provides evidence that the {M}et{S} is highly prevalent in this group of women. {M}enopause can be a predictor of {M}et{S} independent of age in {T}unisian women.}, keywords = {{TUNISIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{B}iomed {R}esearch {I}nternational}, numero = {}, pages = {art.457131 [8 ]}, ISSN = {2314-6133}, year = {2014}, DOI = {10.1155/2014/457131}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010061932}, }
