@article{fdi:010061835, title = {{T}he central atlantic magmatic province extends into {B}olivia}, author = {{B}ertrand, {H}. and {F}ornari, {M}ichel and {M}arzoli, {A}. and {G}arcia-{D}uarte, {R}. and {S}emp{\'e}r{\'e}, {T}hierry}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {C}entral {A}tlantic {M}agmatic {P}rovince ({CAMP}) is the largest continental flood basalt ({CFB}) province on {E}arth and was associated with the onset of fragmentation of the supercontinent {P}angea at the {T}riassic-{J}urassic boundary. {I}n order to clarify the extent of the {CAMP} in {S}outh {A}merica, we investigate basaltic remnants in southern {B}olivia ({T}arabuco, {E}ntre {R}ios and {C}amiri areas) by combining stratigraphic, geochronological ({A}r-40/{A}r-39 data) and geochemical (major and trace element, {N}d-{S}r isotopes) approaches. {L}ava-flows reaching a total thickness up to 150 m and associated sills overlie syn-rift red beds assigned to the {T}riassic. {T}he magmatic rocks consist of low-{T}i tholeiites that are remarkably homogeneous in composition. {N}otably, their trace element and {N}d-{S}r isotopic compositions closely match those of {CAMP} basalts particularly those of southwest {B}razil. {A}r-40/{A}r-39 dating failed to yield robust plateau ages but the best estimates of the crystallization age at 198.1 +/- 1.5 and 199.2 +/- 2.2 {M}a are similar to those of {CAMP} basalts throughout the province. {T}hese {B}olivian basalts, which may have covered an initial surface of similar to 30,000 km(2), represent the known southernmost occurrence of the {CAMP}. {T}hey were erupted as a single pulse, more than 8000 km away from the northern edge of the province. {W}e discuss the implications of such a huge elongated {CFB} for the current plume models and we suggest, as an alternative, that large-scale melting beneath the {P}angea supercontinent due to mantle global warming could have triggered the emplacement of the {CAMP}.}, keywords = {{C}entral {A}tlantic {M}agmatic {P}rovince ; {B}olivia ; {A}r-40/{A}r-39 age ; {B}asalt ; {BOLIVIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{L}ithos}, volume = {188}, numero = {}, pages = {33--43}, ISSN = {0024-4937}, year = {2014}, DOI = {10.1016/j.lithos.2013.10.019}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010061835}, }
