@article{fdi:010061833, title = {{P}otential of {GDGT}s as a temperature proxy along an altitudinal transect at {M}ount {R}ungwe ({T}anzania)}, author = {{C}offinet, {S}. and {H}uguet, {A}. and {W}illiamson, {D}avid and {F}osse, {C}. and {D}erenne, {S}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{G}lycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers ({GDGT}s) are membrane lipids of high molecular weight and include the isoprenoid {GDGT}s (i{GDGT}s) produced by {A}rchaea and the branched {GDGT}s (br{GDGT}s) produced by unknown bacteria. {S}everal indices have been developed to describe the relationship between {GDGT} distribution and environmental parameters: the {TEX}86 (tetraether index of tetraethers consisting of 86 carbons), based on the relative abundances of i{GDGT}s, and the {MBT} (methylation index of branched tetraethers) and {CBT} (cyclisation ratio of branched tetraethers), based on the relative abundance of br{GDGT}s. {F}or soils, most studies have focused only on the relationship between br{GDGT} distribution and environmental parameters, without examining the i{GDGT} distribution. {W}e have analysed both br{GDGT} and i{GDGT} distributions and determined {GDGT}-derived proxies along an altitudinal transect at {M}t. {R}ungwe, {T}anzania. {MBT}/{CBT}-derived temperature values were found to correlate linearly with altitude ({R}-2 0.75), as observed before for the other altitudinal transects investigated. {T}he {MBT}/{CBT}-derived temperature lapse rate along {M}t. {R}ungwe (0.7 degrees {C}/100 m) was similar to the in situ measured one and was consistent with results obtained previously for an altitudinal gradient in the same region at higher altitude. {T}his confirms the robustness of the {MBT}/{CBT} as a paleoelevation proxy in {E}ast {A}frica. {I}n addition, a linear correlation ({R}-2 0.50) between {TEX}86 and altitude was observed, likely reflecting the effect of the adiabatic cooling of air with altitude on i{GDGT} distribution. {T}his suggests that {TEX}86 might be used to track temperature change in terrestrial settings, in addition to the {MBT}/{CBT} indices.}, keywords = {{TANZANIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{O}rganic {G}eochemistry}, volume = {68}, numero = {}, pages = {82--89}, ISSN = {0146-6380}, year = {2014}, DOI = {10.1016/j.orggeochem.2014.01.004}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010061833}, }
