@article{fdi:010061766, title = {{M}esotoga infera sp nov., a mesophilic member of the order {T}hermotogales, isolated from an underground gas storage aquifer}, author = {{B}en {H}ania, {W}ajdi and {P}ostec, {A}. and {A}ullo, {T}. and {R}anchou-{P}eyruse, {A}. and {E}rauso, {G}. and {B}rochier-{A}rmanet, {C}. and {H}amdi, {M}. and {O}llivier, {B}ernard and {S}aint-{L}aurent, {S}. and {M}agot, {M}. and {F}ardeau, {M}arie-{L}aure}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}train {VN}s100({T}), a novel mesophilic, anaerobic, rod-coccoid-shaped bacterium, having a sheath-like outer structure (toga), was isolated from a water sample collected in the area of an underground gas storage aquifer. {I}t was non-motile with cells appearing singly (2-4 mu m long x 1-2 mu m wide), in pairs or as long chains and stained {G}ram-negative. {S}train {VN}s100({T}) was heterotrophic, able to use arabinose, cellobiose, fructose, galactose, glucose, lactose, lactate, mannose, maltose, raffinose, ribose, sucrose and xylose as energy sources only in the presence of elemental sulfur as terminal electron acceptor. {A}cetate, {CO}2 and sulfide were the end products of sugar metabolism. {H}ydrogen was not detected. {E}lemental sulfur, but not thiosulfate, sulfate or sulfite, were reduced to sulfide. {S}train {VN}s100({T}) grew at temperatures between 30 and 50 degrees {C} (optimum 45 degrees {C}), at p{H} values between 6.2 and 7.9 (optimum 7.3-7.5) and at {N}a{C}l concentrations between 0 and 15 g l(-1) (optimum 2 g l(-1)). {T}he {DNA} {G}+{C} content was 47.5 mol%. {T}he main cellular fatty acid was {C}-16:0. {P}hylogenetic analysis of the small subunit r{RNA} gene sequence indicated that strain {VN}s100({T}) had as its closest relatives '{M}esotoga sulfurireducens' (97.1 % similarity) and {M}esotoga prima (similarity of 97.1 % and 97.7 % with each of its two genes, respectively) within the order {T}hermotogales. {H}ybridization between strain {VNS}100({T}) and '{M}. sulfurireducens' and between strain {VNS}100({T}) and {M}. prima showed 12.9 % and 20.6 % relatedness, respectively. {B}ased on phenotypic, phylogenetic and taxonomic characteristics, strain {VN}s100({T}) is proposed as a representative of a novel species of the genus {M}esotoga in the family {T}hermotogaceae, order {T}hermotogales. {T}he name {M}esotoga infera sp. nov. is proposed. {T}he type strain is {VN}s100({T}) (={DSM} 25546({T})={JCM} 18154({T})).}, keywords = {{FRANCE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{I}nternational {J}ournal of {S}ystematic and {E}volutionary {M}icrobiology}, volume = {63}, numero = {8}, pages = {3003--3008}, ISSN = {1466-5026}, year = {2013}, DOI = {10.1099/ijs.0.047993-0}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010061766}, }
