@article{fdi:010061757, title = {{E}volution of symbiosis in the legume genus {A}eschynomene}, author = {{C}haintreuil, {C}l{\'e}mence and {A}rrighi, {J}ean-{F}ran{\c{c}}ois and {G}iraud, {E}ric and {M}iche, {L}. and {M}oulin, {L}ionel and {D}reyfus, {B}ernard and {M}unive-{H}ernandez, {J}. {A}. and {V}illegas-{H}ernandez, {M}. {D}. and {B}{\'e}na, {G}illes}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{L}egumes in the genus {A}eschynomene form nitrogen-fixing root nodules in association with {B}radyrhizobium strains. {S}everal aquatic and subaquatic species have the additional capacity to form stem nodules, and some of them can symbiotically interact with specific strains that do not produce the common {N}od factors synthesized by all other rhizobia. {T}he question of the emergence and evolution of these nodulation characters has been the subject of recent debate. {W}e conducted a molecular phylogenetic analysis of 38 different {A}eschynomene species. {T}he phylogeny was reconstructed with both the chloroplast {DNA} trn{L} intron and the nuclear ribosomal {DNA} {ITS}/5.8{S} region. {W}e also tested 28 {A}eschynomene species for their capacity to form root and stem nodules by inoculating different rhizobial strains, including nod{ABC}-containing strains ({ORS}285, {USDA}110) and a nod{ABC}-lacking strain ({ORS}278). {M}aximum likelihood analyses resolved four distinct phylogenetic groups of {A}eschynomene. {W}e found that stem nodulation may have evolved several times in the genus, and that all {A}eschynomene species using a {N}od-independent symbiotic process clustered in the same clade. {T}he phylogenetic approach suggested that {N}od-independent nodulation has evolved once in this genus, and should be considered as a derived character, and this result is discussed with regard to previous experimental studies.}, keywords = {{A}eschynomene ; {B}radyrhizobium ; evolution ; {N}od factor-independent ; nodulation ; phylogeny ; rhizobia ; stem nodulation}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{N}ew {P}hytologist}, volume = {200}, numero = {4}, pages = {1247--1259}, ISSN = {1469-8137}, year = {2013}, DOI = {10.1111/nph.12424}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010061757}, }
