  abstract = {{A} checklist is given below of 1162 species of shore and epipelagic fishes belonging to 111 families that occur in the islands of {T}onga, {S}outh {P}acifie {O}cean; 40 of these are epipelagic species. {A}s might be expected, the fish fauna of {T}onga is most similar to those of {S}amoa and {F}iji; at least 658 species of the fishes found in {T}onga are also known from {F}iji and the islands of {S}amoa. {T}welve species of shore fishes are presently known only from {T}onga. {S}pecimens of {T}ongan fishes are housed mainly in the fish collections of the {N}ational {M}useum of{N}atural {H}istory, {W}ashington {D}.{C}.; {B}ernice {P}. {B}ishop {M}useum, {H}onolulu; {M}useum {N}ational d'{H}istoire {N}aturelle, {P}aris; and the {A}ustralian {M}useum, {S}ydney. {N}ative {T}ongan names offishes, when known, are presented afterspecies names.},
