  abstract = {{T}icks, belonging to the soft ticks species {O}rnithodorus sonrai, have been collected from six sites in {S}enegal and were tested for the presence of {B}artonella spp. {I}nitial screening by {PCR} revealed the presence of these bacteria in ticks from two villages, {S}oulkhou {T}hisse (5/8, 62.5%) and {M}aka {G}ouye (1/24, 4.2%). {T}hree bacterial strains were isolated from live ticks, and the genetic characterization of these strains suggests that they belong to two previously unknown species. {T}he pathogenicity of these two new species of {B}artonella is not yet known. {T}he new isolates described here are the first strains of {B}artonella spp. from soft ticks and the first isolates from any arthropod species in {A}frica.},
