@article{fdi:010061470, title = {{B}acterial communities associated with {P}orites {W}hite {P}atch {S}yndrome ({PWPS}) on three {W}estern {I}ndian {O}cean ({WIO}) coral reefs}, author = {{S}{\'e}r{\'e}, {M}. {G}. and {T}ortosa, {P}. and {C}habanet, {P}ascale and {T}urquet, {J}. and {Q}uod, {J}. {P}. and {S}chleyer, {M}. {H}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he scleractinian coral {P}orites lutea, an important reef-building coral on western {I}ndian {O}cean reefs ({WIO}), is affected by a newly-reported white syndrome ({WS}) the {P}orites white patch syndrome ({PWPS}). {H}istopathology and culture-independent molecular techniques were used to characterise the microbial communities associated with this emerging disease. {M}icroscopy showed extensive tissue fragmentation generally associated with ovoid basophilic bodies resembling bacterial aggregates. {R}esults of 16{S} r{RNA} sequence analysis revealed a high variability between bacterial communities associated with {PWPS}-infected and healthy tissues in {P}. lutea, a pattern previously reported in other coral diseases such as black band disease ({BBD}), white band disease ({WBD}) and white plague diseases ({WPD}). {F}urthermore, substantial variations in bacterial communities were observed at the different sampling locations, suggesting that there is no strong bacterial association in {P}orites lutea on {WIO} reefs. {S}everal sequences affiliated with potential pathogens belonging to the {V}ibrionaceae and {R}hodobacteraceae were identified, mainly in {PWPS}-infected coral tissues. {A}mong them, only two ribotypes affiliated to {S}himia marina ({NR}043300.1) and {V}ibrio hepatarius ({NR}025575.1) were consistently found in diseased tissues from the three geographically distant sampling localities. {T}he role of these bacterial species in {PWPS} needs to be tested experimentally.}, keywords = {{OCEAN} {INDIEN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}los {O}ne}, volume = {8}, numero = {12}, pages = {e83746}, ISSN = {1932-6203}, year = {2013}, DOI = {10.1371/journal.pone.0083746}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010061470}, }
