@article{fdi:010061422, title = {{T}ropical cyclones in two atmospheric (re)analyses and their response in two oceanic reanalyses}, author = {{J}ourdain, {N}. {C}. and {B}arnier, {B}. and {F}erry, {N}. and {V}ialard, {J}{\'e}r{\^o}me and {M}enk{\`e}s, {C}hristophe and {L}engaigne, {M}atthieu and {P}arent, {L}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}n this paper, we first evaluate the ability of the {E}uropean {C}entre for {M}edium {R}ange {F}orecast operational analysis and the {ERA}-{I}nterim reanalysis to capture the surface wind signature of tropical cyclones ({TC}s). {I}n those products, the error on the {TC} position is typically similar to 150 km, cyclones are too big (similar to 250 km in {ERA}-{I}nterim and >100 km in the operational analysis against similar to 50 km in observations) and the maximum wind speed is on average underestimated by 15-27 m.s(-1) for strong {TC}s. {T}hese biases are generally reduced with the increase of horizontal resolution in the operational analysis, but remain significant at {T}1279 (similar to 16 km). {W}e then assess the {TC}s oceanic temperature signature in two global eddy-permitting ocean reanalyses ({GLORYS}1 and {GLORYS}2) forced by the above atmospheric products. {T}he resulting cold wake is on average underestimated by similar to 50% in the two oceanic reanalyses. {T}his bias is largely linked to the underestimated {TC}s strength in the surface forcing, and the resulting underestimated vertical mixing. {T}he overestimated {TC} radius also tends to overemphasize the {E}kman pumping response to the cyclone. {U}nderestimating vertical mixing without underestimating {E}kman pumping results in the absence of the observed subsurface warming away from the {TC} tracks in the two reanalyses. {D}ata assimilation only marginally contributes to reducing these errors, partly because cyclone signatures are not well resolved by the ocean observing system. {B}ased on these results, we propose some assimilation and forcing strategies in order to improve the restitution of {TC} signatures in oceanic reanalyses. {C}rown {C}opyright ({C}) 2013 {P}ublished by {E}lsevier {L}td. {A}ll rights reserved.}, keywords = {{T}ropical cyclone ; {R}eanalysis ; {GLORYS} ; {ERA}-{I}nterim ; {ECMWF}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{O}cean {M}odelling}, volume = {73}, numero = {}, pages = {108--122}, ISSN = {1463-5003}, year = {2014}, DOI = {10.1016/j.ocemod.2013.10.007}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010061422}, }
