@article{fdi:010061379, title = {{C}ranial morphometrics and mitochondrial {DNA} sequences distinguish cryptic species of the longface emperor ({L}ethrinus olivaceus), an emblematic fish of {I}ndo-{W}est {P}acific coral reefs}, author = {{B}orsa, {P}hilippe and {H}siao, {D}.{R}. and {C}arpenter, {K}.{E}. and {C}hen, {W}. {J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{R}ange-wide morphometric variability (cranial measurements) and genetic variability (nucleotide sequences of the cytochrome b gene) were investigated in the longface emperor, {L}ethrinus olivaceus ({L}ethrinidae), an emblematic large predatory fish of {I}ndo-{W}est {P}acific coral reefs. {T}wo cranial morphotypes were observed, one present from the {I}ndian {O}cean to the {C}oral {T}riangle and the other one, from the {C}oral {T}riangle to the western {C}entral {P}acific. {T}he two morphotypes are concordant with reciprocally monophyletic mitochondrial lineages separated by 9.5% net nucleotide distance. {T}hese results suggest an old evolutionary history for {L}. olivaceus, which consists of two distinct species ({L}ethrinus sp. {A} in the {I}ndian {O}cean and {C}oral {T}riangle, {L}ethrinus sp. {B} in the western {P}acific {O}cean), whose distribution ranges meet or overlap in the eastern part of the {C}oral {T}riangle, in {T}aiwan and in {W}est {P}apua. {L}ethrinus sp. {A} comprises two distinct mitochondrial lineages separated by 1.7% net nucleotide distance, one exclusive to the populations from the {I}ndian {O}cean, the other exclusive to {C}oral {T}riangle populations. {T}he latter observation might be explained by vicariance, whereby the two lineages have been isolated from one another on either side of the {S}unda {S}helf because of low sea level in the {P}leistocene. {T}o clarify the nomenclature of this species complex, we recommend sequencing a fragment of the cytochrome b gene of the holotypes of {L}. olivaceus and of its first junior synonyms {L}. rostratus and {L}. waigiensis.}, keywords = {{C}ytochrome b ; {L}ethrinidae ; {N}omenclature ; {P}hylogeography ; {T}axonomy ; {PACIFIQUE}, {ZONE} {TROPICALE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}omptes {R}endus {B}iologies}, volume = {33}, numero = {10}, pages = {505--514}, ISSN = {1631-0691}, year = {2013}, DOI = {10.1016/j.crvi.2013.09.004}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010061379}, }
