@article{fdi:010061245, title = {{P}elagic life and depth : coastal physical features in {W}est {A}frica shape the genetic structure of the bonga shad, {E}thmalosa fimbriata}, author = {{D}urand, {J}ean-{D}ominique and {G}uinand, {B}. and {D}odson, {J}. {J}. and {L}ecomte, {F}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he bonga shad, {E}thmalosa fimbriata, is a {W}est {A}frican pelagic species still abundant in most habitats of its distribution range and thought to be only recently affected by anthropogenic pressure (habitat destruction or fishing pressure). {I}ts presence in a wide range of coastal habitats characterised by different hydrodynamic processes, represents a case study useful for evaluating the importance of physical structure of the west {A}frican shoreline on the genetic structure of a small pelagic species. {T}o investigate this question, the genetic diversity of {E}. fimbriata was assessed at both regional and species range scales, using mitochondrial (mt) and nuclear {DNA} markers. {W}hereas only three panmictic units were identified with mt{DNA} at the large spatial scale, nuclear genetic markers ({EPIC}: exon-primed intron-crossing) indicated a more complex genetic pattern at the regional scale. {I}n the northern-most section of shad's distribution range, up to 4 distinct units were identified. {B}ayesian inference as well as spatial autocorrelation methods provided evidence that gene flow is impeded by the presence of deep-water areas near the coastline (restricting the width of the coastal shelf), such as the {C}ap {T}imiris and the {K}ayar canyons in {M}auritania and {S}enegal, respectively. {T}he added discriminatory power provided by the use of {EPIC} markers proved to be essential to detect the influence of more subtle, contemporary processes (e.g. gene flow, barriers, etc.) acting within the glacial refuges identified previously by mt{DNA}.}, keywords = {{AFRIQUE} {DE} {L}'{OUEST}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}los {O}ne}, volume = {8}, numero = {10}, pages = {}, ISSN = {1932-6203}, year = {2013}, DOI = {10.1371/journal.pone.0077483}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010061245}, }
