@article{fdi:010061211, title = {{P}rofile : the {N}iakhar {H}ealth and {D}emographic {S}urveillance {S}ystem}, author = {{D}elaunay, {V}al{\'e}rie and {D}ouillot, {L}aetitia and {D}iallo, {A}. and {D}ione, {D}. and {T}rape, {J}ean-{F}ran{\c{c}}ois and {M}ediannikov, {O}leg and {R}aoult, {D}idier and {S}okhna, {C}heikh}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {H}ealth and {D}emographic {S}urveillance {S}ystem ({HDSS}) in {N}iakhar, a rural area of {S}enegal, is located 135km east of {D}akar. {T}he {HDSS} was established in 1962 by the {I}nstitut de {R}echerche pour le {D}eveloppement ({IRD}) of {S}enegal to face the shortcomings of the civil registration system and provide demographic indicators. {S}ome 65 villages in the {N}iakhar area were followed annually by the {HDSS} from 1962-1969. {T}he study zone was reduced to 8 villages from 1969-1983, and from then on the {HDSS} was extended to include 22 other villages, covering a total of 30 villages for a population estimated at 43 000 in {J}anuary 2012. {T}hus, 8 villages in the {N}iakhar area have been under demographic surveillance for almost 50 years and 30 villages for 30 years. {V}ital events, migrations, marital changes, pregnancies, and immunizations are routinely recorded every 4 months. {T}he {HDSS} data base also includes epidemiological, economic, and environmental information obtained from specific surveys. {D}ata were collected through annual rounds from 1962 to 1987. {T}he rounds became weekly from 1987-1997, followed by routine visits conducted every 3 months between 1997 and 2007 and every 4 months since then. {T}he data collected in the {HDSS} are not open to access, but can be fairly shared under conditions of collaboration and endowment.}, keywords = {{SENEGAL}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{I}nternational {J}ournal of {E}pidemiology}, volume = {42}, numero = {4}, pages = {1002--1011}, ISSN = {0300-5771}, year = {2013}, DOI = {10.1093/ije/dyt100}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010061211}, }
