  abstract = {{A} checklist of the fishes of {N}ew {C}aledonia is presented. {A} total of 2328 species in 246 families have been recorded from the region. {E}ight of these species are not native, but have been introduced. {F}ive fish families are represented only by introduced species. {T}he native fish fauna of {N}ew {C}aledonia therefore consists of 2320 species in 241 families. {T}he largest families are the {G}obiidae, {L}abridae, {P}omacentridae, {S}erranidae, {A}pogonidae, {B}lenniidae, {M}acrouridae, {M}yctophidae and {M}uraenidae. {T}he freshwater fish fauna is dominated by the families {G}obiidae, {E}leotridae, {A}nguillidae and {M}ugilidae. {A} total of 61 species represent new records from {N}ew {C}aledonia. {T}he fish fauna from {N}ew {C}aledonia includes a total of 125 species occurring in freshwater (plus eight introduced species), 266 (plus two introduced) species in transitional (brackish) waters, and 2320 marine species. {T}he detailed geographical distribution of the {N}ew {C}aledonian fish species including the southern submarine ridges ({L}ord {H}owe {I}sland, {N}orfolk {I}sland, {N}ew {Z}ealand) is provided. {A}mong the {N}ew {C}aledonian marine species, 905 are recorded from the {E}ast {C}oral {S}ea including {C}hesterfield {I}slands, 193 from the {N}ew {C}aledonian basin, 1860 from the {G}rande {T}erre group, 85 from the {N}orfolk {R}idge, and 1029 from the {L}oyalty {R}idge including {L}oyalty {I}slands. {N}ew {C}aledonia has a considerable endemic element of 107 species (4.6 % of the total native species).},
