@article{fdi:010060872, title = {{C}limate change and potato cropping in the {P}eruvian {A}ltiplano}, author = {{S}anabria, {J}. and {L}homme, {J}ean-{P}aul}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he potential impacts of climate change on potatoes cropping in the {P}eruvian highlands ({A}ltiplano) is assessed using climate projections for 2071-2100, obtained from the {H}ad{RM}3{P} regional atmospheric model of the {H}adley {C}entre. {T}he atmospheric model is run under two different special report on emission scenarios: high {CO}2 concentration ({A}2) and moderate {CO}2 concentration ({B}2) for four locations situated in the surroundings of {L}ake {T}iticaca. {T}he two main varieties of potato cultivated in the area are studied: the {A}ndean potato ({S}olanum tuberosum) and the bitter potato ({S}olanum juzepczukii). {A} simple process-oriented model is used to quantify the climatic impacts on crops cycles and yields by combining the effects of temperature on phenology, of radiation and {CO}2 on maximum yield and of water balance on yield deficit. {I}n future climates, air temperature systematically increases, precipitation tends to increase at the beginning of the rainy season and slightly decreases during the rest of the season. {T}he direct effects of these climatic changes are earlier planting dates, less planting failures and shorter crop cycles in all the four locations and for both scenarios. {C}onsequently, the harvesting dates occur systematically earlier: roughly in {J}anuary for the {A}ndean potato instead of {M}arch in the current situation and in {F}ebruary for the bitter potato instead of {A}pril. {O}verall, yield deficits will be higher under climate change than in the current climate. {T}here will be a strong negative impact on yields for {S}. tuberosum (stronger under {A}2 scenario than under {B}2); the impact on {S}. juzepczukii yields, however, appears to be relatively mixed and not so negative.}, keywords = {{PEROU} ; {ANDES}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{T}heoretical and {A}pplied {C}limatology}, volume = {112}, numero = {3-4}, pages = {683--695}, ISSN = {0177-798{X}}, year = {2013}, DOI = {10.1007/s00704-012-0764-1}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010060872}, }
