@article{fdi:010060720, title = {{A} large-scale phylogeny of {S}ynodontis ({M}ochokidae, {S}iluriformes) reveals the influence of geological events on continental diversity during the {C}enozoic}, author = {{P}inton, {A}. and {A}gn{\`e}se, {J}ean-{F}ran{\c{c}}ois and {P}augy, {D}idier and {O}tero, {O}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}o explain the spatial variability of fish taxa at a large scale, two alternative proposals are usually evoked. {I}n recent years, the debate has centred on the relative roles of present and historical processes in shaping biodiversity patterns. {I}n {A}frica, attempts to understand the processes that determine the large scale distribution of fishes and exploration of historical contingencies have been under-investigated given that most of the phylogenetic studies focus on the history of the {G}reat {L}akes. {H}ere, we explore phylogeographic events in the evolutionary history of {S}ynodontis ({M}ohokidae, {S}iluriformes) over {A}frica during the {C}enozoic focusing on the putative role of historical processes. {W}e discuss how known geological events together with hydrographical changes contributed to shape {S}ynodontis biogeographical history. {S}ynodontis was chosen on the basis of its high diversity and distribution in {A}frica: it consists of approximately 120 species that are widely distributed in all hydrographic basins except the {M}aghreb and {S}outh {A}frica. {W}e propose the most comprehensive phylogeny of this catfish genus. {O}ur results provide support for the 'hydrogeological' hypothesis, which proposes that palaeohydrological changes linked with the geological context may have been the cause of diversification of freshwater fish deep in the {T}ertiary. {M}ore precisely, the two main geological structures that participated to shape the hydrographical network in {A}frica, namely the {C}entral {A}frican {S}hear zone and the {E}ast {A}frican rift system, appear as strong drivers of {S}ynodontis diversification and evolution.}, keywords = {{C}atfish ; {S}ynodontis ; {A}frica ; {P}hylogeography ; {G}eotectonic events ; {C}enozoic ; {AFRIQUE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{M}olecular {P}hylogenetics and {E}volution}, volume = {66}, numero = {3}, pages = {1027--1040}, ISSN = {1055-7903}, year = {2013}, DOI = {10.1016/j.ympev.2012.12.009}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010060720}, }
