@article{fdi:010060698, title = {{T}emporal dynamics, residency and site fidelity of spawning aggregations of a herbivorous tropical reef fish {S}iganus sutor}, author = {{B}ijoux, {J}ude and {D}agorn, {L}aurent and {B}erke, {G}. and {C}owley, {P}. {D}. and {S}oria, {M}arc and {G}aertner, {J}ean-{C}laude and {R}obinson, {J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he shoemaker spinefoot {S}iganus sutor is a fast-growing, short-lived, gonochorist and herbivorous reef fish that forms transient fish spawning aggregations ({FSA}s). {I}n the {S}eychelles, {FSA}s of this species occur monthly between {S}eptember and {J}une around the full moon. {T}o study the spawning aggregation dynamics of {S}. sutor, 39 reproductively active individuals were acoustically tagged and monitored at 3 known {FSA} sites ({P}ate {P}olite, {P}ate {D}esire and {P}ate {D}ividi) off the west coast of {P}raslin island ({S}eychelles) between {O}ctober 2010 and {A}pril 2011. {T}he presence and absence of tagged fish at the 3 sites were monitored using moored arrays of passive acoustic receivers, while the density of fish at the {FSA}s was quantified using underwater visual census ({UVC}). {M}ost tagged fish (87.0%) detected in more than 1 spawning period showed fidelity to single spawning sites. {P}redominantly, tagged individuals arrived at {FSA} sites at dawn and departed at dusk. {S}pawning residency times at {FSA} sites ranged from 0.02 to 16.1 d. {A}t {P}ate {P}olite, residency times were higher in the first half of the spawning season. {R}esidency times were often several-fold shorter than aggregation duration which, when combined with patterns in arrival and departure times, indicates high turnover of fish within aggregations. {T}he findings of this study provide information needed for emerging co-management schemes that aim to sustain this socio-economically important fishery.}, keywords = {{F}ish spawning aggregation ; {S}iganus sutor ; {A}coustic telemetry ; {R}esidency time ; {S}ite fidelity ; {S}eychelles ; {SEYCHELLES}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{M}arine {E}cology {P}rogress {S}eries}, volume = {475}, numero = {}, pages = {233--247}, ISSN = {0171-8630}, year = {2013}, DOI = {10.3354/meps10113}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010060698}, }
