@article{fdi:010060671, title = {{A}cceptability and impact on anthropometry of a locally developed {R}eady-to-use therapeutic food in pre-school children in {V}ietnam}, author = {{N}ga, {T}. {T}. and {N}guyen, {M}. and {M}athisen, {R}. and {H}oa, {D}. {T}. {B}. and {M}inh, {N}. {H}. and {B}erger, {J}acques and {W}ieringa, {F}ranck}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground: {I}n {S}outh {E}ast {A}sia, concerns exist about the acceptability of peanut-based {R}eady-to-{U}se-{T}herapeutic-{F}oods ({RUTF}) for the treatment of severe acute malnutrition ({SAM}). {T}herefore, an alternative, culturally acceptable {RUTF} made from locally available ingredients and complying with local food traditions and preferences was developed. {T}he current study evaluated its acceptability and impact on anthropometry. {M}ethods: {T}he study was a randomized, two-arm, cross-over intervention trial to test the acceptability of the local product (bar) against a commercially available, peanut-based {RUTF} paste ({P}lumpy'nut ({R})). {C}hildren (n = 67) from two kindergartens in a rural area of {N}orth {V}ietnam were recruited. {T}he age of the children was between 3 and 5 years. {R}esults: {T}he {V}ietnamese {RUTF} was well-accepted, although overall acceptability was less than of {P}lumpy'nut ({R}), with the latter scoring higher on palatability ({P} < 0.05). {I}n contrast, reluctance to eat {P}lumpy'nut ({R}) was higher than for the {V}ietnamese {RUTF} ({P} < 0.05). {I}mpact on anthropmetrical indices was similar for both {RUTF}. {T}he nutritional status of the children who consumed the two {RUTF} over a 4 week period improved significantly, with a mean weight gain of 0.64 ({SD} 0.27) {K}g, and increases in {WHZ} and {HAZ} z-scores of 0.48 ({SD} 0.30) and 0.05 ({SD} 0.13) respectively ({P} < 0.01 both). {W}eight gain was similar between the 2 products (0.32 kg per 2 weeks for both). {C}onclusions: {B}oth the commercial {P}lumpy'nut ({R}) and the local produced {RUTF} were accepted although the harder consistency of the local product might have caused the lower overall acceptance. {T}he promising increase in nutritional status needs to be confirmed in a controlled trial in children with {SAM}.}, keywords = {{RUTF} ; {S}evere acute malnutrition ; {A}nthropometry ; {A}cceptability ; {P}reschool ; children ; {VIETNAM}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{N}utrition {J}ournal}, volume = {12}, numero = {}, pages = {120}, ISSN = {1475-2891}, year = {2013}, DOI = {10.1186/1475-2891-12-120}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010060671}, }
