@article{fdi:010060552, title = {{R}esurrection of {N}ew {C}aledonian maskray {N}eotrygon trigonoides ({M}yliobatoidei : {D}asyatidae) from synonymy with {N}. kuhlii, based on cytochrome-oxidase {I} gene sequences and spotting patterns}, author = {{B}orsa, {P}hilippe and {A}rlyza, {I}.{S}. and {C}hen, {W}.{J}. and {D}urand, {J}ean-{D}ominique and {M}eekan, {M}.{G}. and {S}hen, {K}.{N}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he maskray from {N}ew {C}aledonia, {N}eotrygon trigonoides {C}aste{I}nau, 1873, has been recently synonymized with the blue-spotted maskray, {N}. kuhlii ({M}uller and {H}enle, 1841), a species with wide {I}ndo-{W}est {P}acific distribution, but the reasons for this are unclear. {B}lue-spotted maskray specimens were collected from the {I}ndian {O}cean ({T}anzania, {S}umatra) and the {C}oral {T}riangle ({I}ndonesia, {T}aiwan, and {W}est {P}apua), and {N}. trigonoides specimens were collected from {N}ew {C}aledonia ({C}oral-{S}ea). {T}heir partial {COI} gene sequences were generated to expand the available {DNA}-barcode database on this species, which currently comprises homologous sequences from {N}ingaloo {R}eef, the {C}oral {T}riangle and the {G}reat {B}arrier {R}eef ({C}oral-{S}ea). {S}potting patterns were also compared across regions. {H}aplotypes from the {C}oral-{S}ea formed a haplogroup phylogenetically distinct from all other haplotypes sampled in the {I}ndo-{W}est {P}acific. {N}o clear-cut geographic composition relative to {DNA}-barcodes or spotting patterns was apparent in {N}. kuhlii samples across the {I}ndian {O}cean and the {C}oral {T}riangle. {T}he {N}ew {C}aledonian maskray had spotting patterns markedly different from all the other samples. {T}his, added to a substantial level of net nucleotide divergence (2.6%) with typical {N}. kuhlii justifies considering the {N}ew {C}aledonian maskray as a separate species, for which we propose to resurrect the name {N}eotrygon trigonoides.}, keywords = {{I}ndo-{W}est {P}acific ; {C}oral {T}riangle ; {C}oral {S}ea ; {N}ew {C}aledonia ; {M}olecular systematics ; {NOUVELLE} {CALEDONIE} ; {PACIFIQUE} {OUEST} ; {OCEAN} {INDIEN} ; {MER} {DE} {CORAIL}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}omptes {R}endus {B}iologies}, volume = {336}, numero = {4}, pages = {221--232}, ISSN = {1631-0691}, year = {2013}, DOI = {10.1016/j.crvi.2013.05.005}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010060552}, }
