@article{fdi:010060499, title = {{E}coregional scale seagrass mapping : a tool to support resilient {MPA} network design in the {C}oral {T}riangle}, author = {{T}orres-{P}ulliza, {D}. and {W}ilson, {J}. {R}. and {D}armawan, {A}. and {C}ampbell, {S}. {J}. and {A}ndr{\'e}fou{\¨e}t, {S}erge}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}eagrass beds are of exceptional economic, ecological and social value in the {C}oral {T}riangle. {T}he large number of people who live close to the coast and rely directly on marine resources for food and income paradoxically increases the value of, but also the threats to, these ecosystems. {A} key strategy of the {C}oral {T}riangle {I}nitiative is to protect shallow coastal ecosystems through the design and implementation of resilient networks of marine protected areas ({MPA}s). {T}his strategy requires accurate spatial data on the distribution and extent of coastal habitats (coral reef, seagrass and mangrove) at scales which match conservation planning decisions. {I}n the {C}oral {T}riangle, seagrass distribution maps are not readily available at ecoregional scales. {T}he {L}esser {S}unda ecoregion, extending from {B}ali, {I}ndonesia to {T}imor-{L}este, is one of 11 ecoregions of the {C}oral {T}riangle and a high priority for conservation and sustainable management of marine resources. {T}o support the design of a resilient {MPA} network for the {L}esser {S}unda ecoregion, a seagrass distribution map was generated based on {L}andsat imagery, literature review and groundtruth data. {S}eagrass beds were estimated to cover an area of 273 km(2) at an overall accuracy of 78%. {U}se of the seagrass distribution map in the {MPA} design improved the habitat representation and connectivity - key criteria for resilient {MPA} design. {T}he final {MPA} design included 80 km(2) of seagrass beds, with more than half the beds adjacent to coral reefs and mangroves. {T}his study demonstrates the effective use of {L}andsat imagery and remote sensing techniques to derive ecoregional scale seagrass maps supporting {MPA} network design.}, keywords = {{OCEAN} {INDIEN} ; {INDONESIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{O}cean and {C}oastal {M}anagement}, volume = {80}, numero = {}, pages = {55--64}, ISSN = {0964-5691}, year = {2013}, DOI = {10.1016/j.ocecoaman.2013.04.005}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010060499}, }
