  abstract = {{I}t has been previously established that the {L}eopard {W}hipray, {H}imantura leoparda, consists of two genetically isolated, cryptic species, provisionally designated as '{C}luster 1' and '{C}luster 4' ({A}rlyza et al., {M}ol. {P}hylogenet. {E}vol. 65 (2013) [11). {H}ere, we show that the two cryptic species differ by the spotting patterns on the dorsal surface of adults: {C}luster-4 individuals tend to have larger-ocellated spots, which also more often have a continuous contour than {C}luster-1 individuals. {W}e show that {H}. leopard a's holotype has the typical larger-ocellated spot pattern, designating {C}luster 4 as the actual {H}. leoparda. {T}he other species ({C}luster 1) is described as {H}imantura tutul sp. nov. on the basis of the nucleotide sequence of a 655-base pair fragment of its cytochrome-oxidase {I} gene ({GENBANK} accession {N}o. {JX}263335). {N}ucleotide synapomorphies at this locus clearly distinguish {H}. tutul sp. nov. from all three other valid species in the {H}. uarnak species complex, namely {H}. leoparda, {H}. uarnak, and {H}. undulata. {H}. tutul sp. nov. has a wide distribution in the {I}ndo-{W}est {P}acific, from the shores of eastern {A}frica to the {I}ndo-{M}alay archipelago. {H}. leoparda under its new definition has a similarly wide {I}ndo-{W}est {P}acific distribution.},
