@article{fdi:010060331, title = {{S}eismotectonics of the 2008 and 2009 {Q}aidam earthquakes and its implication for regional tectonics}, author = {{C}hen, {G}. {H}. and {X}u, {X}. {W}. and {Z}hu, {A}. {L}. and {Z}hang, {X}. {Q}. and {Y}uan, {R}. {M}. and {K}linger, {Y}. and {N}ocquet, {J}ean-{M}athieu}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}hree magnitude >6 earthquakes struck {Q}aidam, {Q}inghai province, {C}hina, in {N}ovember 10th 2008, {A}ugust 28th and 31st 2009 respectively. {T}he {Z}ongwulongshan fault has often been designated as the active seismogenic structure, although it is at odd with the data. {O}ur continuous {GPS} station ({CGPS}), the {X}iao {Q}aidam station, located in the north of the {Q}aidam basin, is less than 30 km to the southwest of the 2008 earthquake. {T}his {CGPS} station recorded the near field co-seismic deformation. {H}ere we analyzed the co-seismic dislocation based on the {GPS} time series and the rupture processes from focal mechanism for the three earthquakes. {T}he aftershocks were relocated to constrain the spatial characteristics of the 2008 and 2009 {Q}aidam earthquakes. {F}ield geological and geomorphological investigation and interpretation of satellite images show that the {X}itieshan fault and {Z}ongwulongshan fault were activated as left lateral thrust during the late {Q}uaternary. {E}vidence of folding can also be identified. {I}ntegrated analyses based on our data and the regional tectonic environment show that the {X}itieshan fault is the fault responsible for the 2008 {Q}aidam earthquake, which is a low dip angle thrust with left lateral strike slip. {T}he {Z}ongwulongshan fault is the seismogenic fault of the 2009 earthquakes, which is a south dipping back thrust of the northern marginal thrust system of the {Q}aidam basin. {F}olding takes a significant part of the deformation in the northern marginal thrust system of the {Q}aidam basin, dominating the contemporary structure style of the northern margin of the {Q}aidam basin and {Q}ilianshan tectonic system. {I}n this region, this fault and fold system dominates the earthquake activities with frequent small magnitude earthquakes.}, keywords = {{Q}aidam earthquakes ; seismotectonics ; {X}itieshan fault ; {Z}ongwulongshan ; fault ; structure style ; {CHINE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}cta {G}eologica {S}inica-{E}nglish {E}dition}, volume = {87}, numero = {2}, pages = {618--628}, ISSN = {1000-9515}, year = {2013}, DOI = {10.1111/1755-6724.12072}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010060331}, }
