@article{fdi:010060190, title = {{T}he {E}chinoderma fauna of {E}uropa, {E}parses island (scattered islands) in the {M}ozambique channel ({S}outh {W}estern {I}ndian {O}cean)}, author = {{C}onand, {C}. and {S}t{\¨o}hr, {S}. and {E}leaume, {M}. and {M}agalon, {H}. and {C}habanet, {P}ascale}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{E}uropa is one of the {E}parses {I}slands, {F}rench islands scattered in the {M}ozambique {C}hannel. {T}hey are isolated islands of coral origin, without permanent human population. {T}his situation makes them good candidates to evaluate the evolution of biodiversity without direct anthropogenic influences. {K}nowledge is still scarce because their accessibility is limited. {W}ith the idea of classifying them as {M}arine {P}rotected {A}reas, a management plan is required based on the coral reef communities. {A}mong several aims, the program {B}io{R}e{CIE} ({B}iodiversity, {R}esources and {C}onservation of {E}parses {I}slands) was to complete the inventories of several marine groups, including the echinoderms, which had never been assessed before. {I}n {N}ovember 2011, a multidisciplinary team explored the reef slopes of the island by scuba diving down to 20 meters (10 sites), and the reef flats at low tide (14 sites, including the lagoon surrounded by mangrove), collecting and taking photos of the organisms which have been preserved in 95% ethanol and identified. {T}he total species richness for echinoderms was 39 including 4 {C}rinoidea, 8 {E}chinoidea, 5 {A}steroidea, with {A}quilonastra chantalae a new species, 13 {O}phiuroidea and 9 {H}olothuroidea. {T}wenty three species were collected on the slopes and 21 on the reef flats. {G}iven the limited number of sites studied, the occurrence of the different species in each class is presented as frequent, infrequent or rare. {T}he semi quantitative measure of abundance identified populations with high densities, as {S}tichopus chloronotus, {O}phiocoma scolopendrina and {E}chinometra mathaei on the reef flats. {S}everal species were only collected as juveniles. {O}n the slopes {E}chinostrephus molaris, {O}phiothela danae and diadematids were frequent, but with lower densities. {O}n the whole the echinoderm fauna is not very diverse, nor abundant, except on the reef flats; the presence of holothurians near the lagoon entrance, in a mangrove habitat is notable.}, keywords = {{ILE} ; {RECIF} {CORALLIEN} ; {INVERTEBRE} {AQUATIQUE} ; {INVENTAIRE} {FAUNISTIQUE} ; {DIVERSITE} {SPECIFIQUE} ; {ESPECE} {NOUVELLE} ; {ABONDANCE} ; {AIRE} {MARINE} {PROTEGEE} ; {OCEAN} {INDIEN} {ILES} ; {EUROPA} {ILE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}ahiers de {B}iologie {M}arine}, volume = {54}, numero = {4}, pages = {499--504}, ISSN = {2262-3094}, year = {2013}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010060190}, }
