@article{fdi:010058983, title = {{A}rtesunate-amodiaquine efficacy in {C}ongolese children with acute uncomplicated falciparum malaria in {B}razzaville}, author = {{N}dounga, {M}. and {M}ayengue, {P}. {I}. and {C}asimiro, {P}. {N}. and {L}oumouamou, {D}. and {B}asco, {L}eonardo and {N}toumi, {F}. and {B}rasseur, {P}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground: {C}ongo-{B}razzaville adopted artemisinin-based combination therapy ({ACT}) in 2006. {A}rtesunate-amodiaquine ({AS} + {AQ}) and artemether-lumefantrine are the first-line and second-line anti-malarial drugs to treat uncomplicated {P}lasmodium falciparum malaria, respectively. {T}he baseline efficacy of {AS} + {AQ} was evaluated from {F}ebruary to {A}ugust 2005 in patients living in {B}razzaville, the capital city of the {R}epublic of {C}ongo. {M}ethods: {O}ne hundred and ninety-seven patients (96 <= 5 years old and 101 > 5 years old, including adults) were recruited in a non-randomized study, treated under supervision with {AS} + {AQ}, and were followed up for 28 days in accordance with the 2003 {W}orld {H}ealth {O}rganization protocol. {P}lasmodium falciparum recrudescent isolates from day 7 to day 28 were compared to pretreatment isolates by polymerase chain reaction ({PCR}) to distinguish between re-infection and recrudescence. {R}esults: {T}he overall efficacy of {AS} + {AQ} after {PCR} correction on day 28 was 94.4%. {A}n adequate clinical and parasitological response was observed in 94.3% and 94.4% of children aged <= 5 years old and those aged > 5 years old (including adults), respectively. {T}he main reported adverse events were dizziness, vomiting, diarrhoea, pruritus, headache, anorexia, and abdominal pain. {C}onclusion: {T}his study has shown the high efficacy of {AS} + {AQ} in {C}ongolese patients of all ages with acute uncomplicated falciparum malaria and serves as the baseline efficacy and tolerance of this {ACT} in {B}razzaville.}, keywords = {{D}rug resistance ; {A}rtemisinin ; {C}ombination therapy ; {C}hloroquine ; {D}rug efficacy ; {C}ongo-{B}razzaville ; {CONGO}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{M}alaria {J}ournal}, volume = {12}, numero = {}, pages = {53}, ISSN = {1475-2875}, year = {2013}, DOI = {10.1186/1475-2875-12-53}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010058983}, }
