@article{fdi:010058842, title = {{S}ystematics of the coral genus {C}raterastrea ({C}nidaria, {A}nthozoa, {S}cleractinia) and description of a new family through combined morphological and molecular analyses}, author = {{B}enzoni, {F}rancesca and {A}rrigoni, {R}. and {S}tefani, {F}. and {S}tolarski, {J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he monotypic genus {C}raterastrea was assigned to the family {S}iderastreidae owing to the similarity of its septal micromorphology to that of {C}oscinaraea. {S}ubsequently, it was synonymized with {L}eptoseris, family {A}gariciidae, based on corallum macromorphology. {S}ince then, it has remained poorly studied and has been known only from a small number of specimens from relatively deep reef environments in the {R}ed {S}ea and the {C}hagos archipelago, northern {I}ndian {O}cean. {A}ccess to museum collections enabled examination of type material and the recovery of coral skeletons from the {S}eychelles, {M}adagascar, and {M}ayotte, southern {I}ndian {O}cean. {A} recent survey in {M}ayotte allowed the in situ imaging of {C}raterastrea in shallow and turbid reef environments and sampling for molecular analyses. {T}he molecular analyses were in agreement with the examination of micromorphology and microstructure of skeletons by revealing that {C}raterastrea levis, the only species in the genus, differs much from {L}eptoseris foliosa, with which it was synonymized. {M}oreover, {C}raterastrea is closely related to {C}oscinaraea, {H}orastrea and {A}nomastraea. {H}owever, these genera, currently ascribed to the {S}iderastreidae, are genetically distant to {S}iderastrea, the family's type genus, and {P}seudosiderastrea. {H}ence, we restore the genus {C}raterastrea, describe the new family {C}oscinaraeidae due to its deep evolutionary divergence from the {S}iderastreidae, and provide revised diagnoses of the four genera in the family. {T}he description of the new family {C}oscinaraeidae is a further step in the challenging but ongoing process of revision of the taxonomy of scleractinian corals as a result of the molecular systematics revolution.}, keywords = {{A}nomastraea irregularis ; {COI} ; {C}oscinaraea monile ; {C}oscinaraeidae ; {C}raterastrea levis ; {H}orastrea indica ; {L}eptoseris foliosa ; microstructure ; new family ; r{DNA} ; {S}iderastreidae ; {MAYOTTE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{S}ystematics and {B}iodiversity}, volume = {10}, numero = {4}, pages = {417--433}, ISSN = {1477-2000}, year = {2012}, DOI = {10.1080/14772000.2012.744369}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010058842}, }
