@article{fdi:010058227, title = {{M}orphology and magnetic survey of the {R}ivera-{C}ocos plate boundary off {C}olima, {M}exico}, author = {{G}aviria, {J}. {R}. {P}. and {G}utierrez, {C}. {A}. {M}. and {B}andy, {W}. {L}. and {M}ichaud, {F}ran{\c{c}}ois}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he propagation of the {P}acific-{C}ocos {S}egment of the {E}ast {P}acific {R}ise ({EPR}-{PCS}) has significantly altered the plate configuration at the north end of the {M}iddle {A}merica {T}rench. {T}his ridge propagation, the collision of the {EPR}-{PCS} with the {M}iddle {A}merica {T}rench, the separation of the {R}ivera and {C}ocos plates and the formation of the {R}ivera {T}ransform have produced a complex arrangement of morphotectonic elements in the area of {R}ivera-{C}ocos plate boundary, atypical of an oceanic transform boundary. {E}xisting marine magnetic and bathymetric data has proved inadequate to unravel this complexity, thus, a dense grid of total field magnetic data were collected during campaigns {MARTIC}-04 and {MARTIC}-05 of the {B}/{O} {EL} {PUMA} in 2004 and 2006. {T}hese data have greatly clarified the magnetic lineation pattern adjacent to the {M}iddle {A}merica trench, and have revealed an interesting en echelon, {NE}-{SW} oriented magnetic high offshore of the {M}anzanillo {G}raben. {W}e interpret these new data to indicate that the {EPR}-{PCS} ridge segment reached the latitude (similar to 18.3 degrees {N}) of the present day {R}ivera {T}ransform at about {C}hron 2{A}(3) (similar to 3.5{M}a) and propagated further northward, intersecting the {M}iddle {A}merica {T}rench at about 1.7 {M}a ({C}hron 2). {A}t 1.5 {M}a spreading ceased along the {EPR} north of 18.3 degrees {N} and the {EPR}-{PCS} has since retreated southward in association with a southward propagation of the {M}octezuma {S}preading {S}egment. {N}orth of 18.3 degrees {N} the seafloor near the trench has been broken into small, uplifted blocks, perhaps due to the subduction of the young lithosphere generated by the {EPR}-{PCS}.}, keywords = {marine magnetic anomalies ; plate tectonics ; {E}ast {P}acific {R}ise ; {M}iddle {A}merica {T}rench ; {M}exico ; plate reconstructions ; {R}ivera-{C}ocos plate ; boundary ; {PACIFIQUE} ; {AMERIQUE} {CENTRALE} ; {MEXIQUE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{G}eofisica {I}nternacional}, volume = {52}, numero = {1}, pages = {73--85}, ISSN = {0016-7169}, year = {2013}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010058227}, }
