@article{fdi:010058162, title = {{E}arly mid-{H}olocene {SST} variability and surface-ocean water balance in the southwest {P}acific}, author = {{D}uprey, {N}. and {L}azareth, {C}laire {E}. and {C}orr{\`e}ge, {T}. and {L}e {C}ornec, {F}lorence and {M}aes, {C}hristophe and {P}ujol, {N}. and {M}andeng {Y}ogo, {M}agloire and {C}aquineau, {S}andrine and {D}erome, {C}. {S}. and {C}abioch, {G}uy}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{W}e present early mid-{H}olocene records of {S}r/{C}a, delta {O}-18 and delta(18){O}sw from marine archives collected in {V}anuatu: two {P}orites sp. corals (6.7- 6.5 ka {BP}) and a {T}ridacna maxima giant clam (6.2-6.0 ka {BP}). {S}r/{C}a, delta {O}-18, and delta {O}-18(sw) were used as proxies for sea surface temperature ({SST}) and sea surface salinity ({SSS}). {T}he fossil geochemical records were compared to modern {P}orites sp. and {T}. maxima records. {R}econstructed mean {SST}s from the two fossil {P}orites sp. and from the modern coral are similar, implying that the {W}estern {P}acific {W}arm {P}ool ({WPWP})' southern edge had reached its modern location by 6.7- 6.5 ka {BP}. {T}he post-glacial {SST} rise in the {S}outhwest {P}acific was thus completed by the early mid-{H}olocene. {T}he two early mid-{H}olocene corals and the giant clam recorded saltier conditions than modern related to 1) a decoupling between the precipitation regime and the {SPCZ} due to a northerly position of this climatic feature and 2) an increase of the moisture transport to the extra-tropics, driven by a strengthened or extended {H}adley cell. {T}he longest delta {O}-18 coral profile displays an {E}l {N}ino {S}outhern {O}scillation ({ENSO}) signal reduced by 20-30% compared to the period 1928-1992, in concordance with the reduced {ENSO} variability observed in the {P}acific area during the first half of the {H}olocene. {H}owever, the decoupling between the {SPCZ} and the precipitation regime may have also contributed to the weak {ENSO} signal recorded in the early mid-{H}olocene coral delta {O}-18 profile.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}aleoceanography}, volume = {27}, numero = {}, pages = {{PA}4207}, ISSN = {0883-8305}, year = {2012}, DOI = {10.1029/2012pa002350}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010058162}, }
