@article{fdi:010057139, title = {{O}ceanic transports through the {S}olomon {S}ea : the bend of the {N}ew {G}uinea coastal undercurrent}, author = {{G}asparin, {F}. and {G}anachaud, {A}lexandre and {M}aes, {C}hristophe and {M}arin, {F}r{\'e}d{\'e}ric and {E}ldin, {G}{\'e}rard}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}hermocline waters of the tropical southwest {P}acific can be traced back to the center of the {S}outh {P}acific basin and have a potential influence on equatorial surface conditions and on the characteristics of the {E}l {N}ino {S}outhern {O}scillation on decadal timescales. {T}he {S}olomon {S}ea is traversed by this influential flow, and therefore is an optimal place for exploring this oceanic connection to the equator. {F}rom a high-resolution hydrographic survey at which we applied an inverse box model, we describe the main pathways at the entrance of the {S}olomon {S}ea, and more particularly the extremely sharp bend of the western boundary current around the south-east tip of {P}apua {N}ew {G}uinea. {O}f the 30 {S}v subtropical waters transported into the {C}oral {S}ea from the east, above 1300 m, 29 +/- 5 {S}v makes its way through the {S}olomon {S}ea with a large part transported in a boundary current, at the entrance of the {S}olomon {S}ea. {A}round the south-east tip of {P}apua {N}ew {G}uinea, the {G}ulf of {P}apua {C}urrent turns abruptly to the north, in a very sharp bend as it merges into the {N}ew {G}uinea {C}oastal {U}ndercurrent, on its way, toward the equator. {T}he warm currents transport large amounts of internal energy, with a total of 1.0 +/- 0.3 10(15){W} entering the {S}olomon {S}ea from the south. {C}itation: {G}asparin, {F}., {A}. {G}anachaud, {C}. {M}aes, {F}. {M}arin, and {G}. {E}ldin (2012), {O}ceanic transports through the {S}olomon {S}ea: {T}he bend of the {N}ew {G}uinea {C}oastal {U}ndercurrent, {G}eophys. {R}es. {L}ett., 39, {L}15608, doi:10.1029/2012{GL}052575.}, keywords = {{MER} {DE} {CORAIL} ; {SALOMON}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{G}eophysical {R}esearch {L}etters}, volume = {39}, numero = {}, pages = {{L}15608}, ISSN = {0094-8276}, year = {2012}, DOI = {10.1029/2012gl052575}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010057139}, }
