(1991) [5]). {T}his result has since been challenged by authors claiming that {C}hilean mussels should be considered a local subspecies of {M}. galloprovincialis {L}mk. 1819. {M}oreover, morphological, physiological, ecotoxicological and molecular genetic studies on {C}hilean smooth-shelled mussels still frequently refer to '{M}. chilensis' {H}upe 1854, even though the previous discovery of alien {M}. galloprovincialis and considerable heterogeneity in shell morphology among samples collected along the {C}hilean shores raise concerns that different {M}ytilus spp. species might have been included under '{M}. chilensis'. {H}ere we reviewed the molecular and morphological data available on smooth-shelled mussels from {C}hile in an attempt to clarify both their genetic composition and their taxonomic status. {U}sing multivariate analysis on sample x allozyme-frequency matrices, we confirmed the widespread occurrence of the {S}outhern-{H}emisphere form of {M}. edulis along the shores from the {N}orth {P}atagonia region of {C}hile to the southern tip of the {S}outh {A}merican continent. {T}he populations sampled in southern central {C}hile showed some evidence of slight introgression from {S}outhern-{H}emisphere {M}. galloprovincialis. {M}orphological characterization of a sample from {D}ichato in southern central {C}hile was consistent with its previous genetic identification as {M}editerranean {M}. galloprovincialis. {T}he occurrence of {S}outhern-{H}emisphere {M}. galloprovincialis in {P}unta {A}renas at the southern tip of the {S}outh {A}merican continent was also reported. {S}outhern-{H}emisphere {M}. edulis, including native {C}hilean smooth-shelled {M}ytilus, should be assigned subspecific rank and named {M}. edulis platensis d'{O}rbigny 1846.}, keywords = {{M}olecular genotyping ; {M}orphometrics ; {I}nvasive species ; {M}ytilus edulis platensis ; {M}ytilus galloprovincialis ; {AUSTRALIE} ; {TASMANIA} ; {PACIFIQUE} {SUD}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}omptes {R}endus {B}iologies}, volume = {335}, numero = {1}, pages = {51--61}, ISSN = {1631-0691}, year = {2012}, DOI = {10.1016/j.crvi.2011.10.002}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010057054}, }
