@article{fdi:010056225, title = {{B}reeding avifauna of the {C}hesterfield {I}slands, {C}oral {S}ea : current population sizes, trends, and threats}, author = {{B}orsa, {P}hilippe and {P}andolfi, {M}. and {A}ndr{\'e}fou{\¨e}t, {S}erge and {B}retagnolle, {V}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}his paper reports on post-1991 census data and on the breeding phenology of seabirds of the {C}hesterfield-{B}ampton and {B}ellona groups of coral islets in the {C}oral {S}ea. {I}n total, 13 resident bird species were observed [{W}edge-tailed {S}hearwater ({P}uffinus pacificus), {M}asked {B}ooby ({S}. dactylatra), {B}rown {B}ooby ({S}ula leucogaster), {R}ed-footed {B}ooby ({S}. sula), {L}esser {F}rigatebird ({F}regata arid), {G}reat {F}rigatebird ({F}. minor), {B}lack {N}oddy ({A}nous minim's), {B}rown {N}oddy {A}. stolidus), {C}rested {T}ern ({S}terna bergii), {S}ooty {T}ern ({S}. fuscata), {F}airy {T}ern ({S}. nereis), {B}lack-naped {T}ern ({S}. sumatrana), and {B}uff-banded {R}ail ({G}allirallus philippensis)]. {S}egregation for nesting habitat was similar to that previously observed on other coral-reef islets of the {C}oral {S}ea. {B}reeding periods were either in the winter ({M}asked and {R}ed-footed {B}oobies, {F}rigatebirds, {F}airy {T}ern) or in the summer ({W}edge-tailed {S}hearwater, {B}lack and {B}rown {N}oddies, {C}rested and {B}lack-naped {T}erns) or year-round ({B}rown {B}ooby). {S}ooty {T}erns bred twice a year (summer and spring), but this was not consistent across years. {E}stimates of breeding population sizes for the whole {C}hesterfield-{B}ampton and {B}ellona groups are proposed for {W}edge-tailed {S}hearwater (90,000 to 106,000 breeding pairs), {M}asked {B}ooby (280-500 pairs), {B}rown {B}ooby (3,800-5,800 pairs), {R}ed-footed {B}ooby (7,200-7,300 pairs), {L}esser {F}rigatebird (1,600 pairs), {G}reat {F}rigatebird (350-480 pairs), {B}lack {N}oddy (29,000-45,000 pairs), {B}rown {N}oddy (15,000-23,000 pairs), {C}rested {T}ern (80-100 pairs), {S}ooty {T}ern (11,000-46,000 pairs), and {B}lack-naped {T}ern (70-90 pairs). {I}nterannual fluctuation in breeding population size was apparent in {W}edge-tailed {S}hearwater. {O}ver the last 30 yr, an increase in {B}rown {B}ooby abundance was noted, whereas declines are suspected for the {F}airy {T}ern and {B}uff-banded {R}ail. {A}mong the threats to nesting seabirds are stress and other disturbances caused by human frequentation, including poaching of seabird chicks and introduced mice.}, keywords = {{CHESTERFIELD}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}acific {S}cience}, volume = {64}, numero = {2}, pages = {297--314}, ISSN = {0030-8870}, year = {2010}, DOI = {10.2984/64.2.297}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010056225}, }
