@article{fdi:010055977, title = {{I}nteraction between coastal and oceanic ecosystems of the {W}estern and {C}entral {P}acific {O}cean through predator-prey relationship {S}tudies}, author = {{A}llain, {V}. and {F}ernandez, {E}. and {H}oyle, {S}. {D}. and {C}aillot, {S}. and {J}urado-{M}olina, {J}. and {A}ndr{\'e}fou{\¨e}t, {S}erge and {N}icol, {S}. {J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {W}estern and {C}entral {P}acific {O}cean sustains the highest tuna production in the world. {T}his province is also characterized by many islands and a complex bathymetry that induces specific current circulation patterns with the potential to create a high degree of interaction between coastal and oceanic ecosystems. {B}ased on a large dataset of oceanic predator stomach contents, our study used generalized linear models to explore the coastal-oceanic system interaction by analyzing predator-prey relationship. {W}e show that reef organisms are a frequent prey of oceanic predators. {P}redator species such as albacore ({T}hunnus alalunga) and yellowfin tuna ({T}hunnus albacares) frequently consume reef prey with higher probability of consumption closer to land and in the western part of the {P}acific {O}cean. {F}or surface-caught-predators consuming reef prey, this prey type represents about one third of the diet of predators smaller than 50 cm. {T}he proportion decreases with increasing fish size. {F}or predators caught at depth and consuming reef prey, the proportion varies with predator species but generally represents less than 10%. {T}he annual consumption of reef prey by the yellowfin tuna population was estimated at 0.8 +/- 0.40{CV} million tonnes or 2.17x10(12)+/- 0.40{CV} individuals. {T}his represents 6.1%+/- 60.17{CV} in weight of their diet. {O}ur analyses identify some of the patterns of coastal-oceanic ecosystem interactions at a large scale and provides an estimate of annual consumption of reef prey by oceanic predators.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}los {O}ne}, volume = {7}, numero = {5}, pages = {e36701}, ISSN = {1932-6203}, year = {2012}, DOI = {10.1371/journal.pone.0036701}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010055977}, }
