@article{fdi:010055968, title = {{A}n ecosystem approach for the assessment of fisheries impacts on marine top predators : the {B}ay of {B}iscay case study}, author = {{L}assalle, {G}. and {G}ascuel, {D}. and {L}e {L}oc'h, {F}ran{\c{c}}ois and {L}obry, {J}. and {P}ierce, {G}. {J}. and {R}idoux, {V}. and {S}antos, {M}. {B}. and {S}pitz, {J}. and {N}iquil, {N}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A} number of marine mammal populations is currently threatened by their interactions with fisheries. {T}he present study aimed to provide insights into the severity of potential impacts of operational and biological interactions between top predators and fisheries, in the {B}ay of {B}iscay region. {O}ur approach was to modify an {E}copath with {E}cosim ({E}w{E}) model describing the overall structure and function of the ecosystem by including landings and discards of exploited stocks and estimations of the bycatch of non-target compartments. {S}econd, a set of ecological indices and a trophic level ({TL})-based model ({E}co{T}roph, {ET}) were derived from the {E}w{E} model. {ET} was used to simulate the effects of increasing fishing pressure on the ecosystem and, more particularly, on top predators. {T}he {B}ay of {B}iscay was demonstrated to be not far from overexploitation at the current fishing rate, this phenomenon being particularly noticeable for the highest {TL}s. {W}ithin the toothed cetacean community, bottlenose dolphins appeared the most sensitive to resource depletion, whereas common dolphins and harbour porpoises were most impacted by their incidental captures in fishing gears. {T}his study provides a methodological framework to assess the impacts of fisheries on ecosystems for which {E}w{E}, or other ecosystem models, already exist.}, keywords = {{E}copath ; ecosystem modelling ; {E}co{T}roph ; fisheries impacts ; marine mammals ; trophic level}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{I}ces {J}ournal of {M}arine {S}cience}, volume = {69}, numero = {6}, pages = {925--938}, ISSN = {1054-3139}, year = {2012}, DOI = {10.1093/icesjms/fss049}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010055968}, }
