This information is fundamental in any attempt at hydrological modelling. However, the number of hydrological control stations monitoring large hydrological basins has been reduced worldwide. Space hydrology studies during the last five years have shown that satellite radar altimetry means that hydrological monitoring networks' available information can be densified due to the introduction of so-called virtual stations and the joint use of such information along with in-situ measured flow records for estimating expenditure curves at these stations. This study presents the rating curves for 4 Envisat virtual stations located on the main stream of the Orinoco River. Virtual stations' flows were estimated by using the Muskingum-Cunge 1D model. There was less than 1% error between measured and estimated flows. The methodology led to reducing average zero flow depth; in this case, it led to depths ranging from 11 to 20 meters being found along the 130 km of the Orinoco River represented by the virtual stations being considered.
<targetAudience authority="marctarget">specialized</targetAudience><subject><topic>biogas</topic><topic>oxygen enrichment</topic><topic>greenhouse gas</topic><topic>combustion property</topic></subject><subject authority="local"><geographic>COLOMBIE</geographic></subject><subject><geographic>ORENOQUE VALLEE</geographic></subject><classification authority="local">084 </classification><classification authority="local">062 </classification><classification authority="local">126 </classification><relatedItem type="host"><titleInfo><title>Revista Ingenieria e Investigacion</title></titleInfo><part><detail type="volume"><number>31</number></detail><detail type="issue"><number>3</number></detail><extent unit="pages"><start>91</start><end>99</end></extent></part><originInfo><dateIssued>2011</dateIssued></originInfo><identifier type="issn">0120-5609</identifier></relatedItem><identifier type="uri">http://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010054327</identifier><location><physicalLocation>IRD Bondy</physicalLocation><shelfLocator>F B010054327</shelfLocator><url usage="primary display" access="object in context">http://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010054327</url><url access="raw object">http://www.documentation.ird.fr/intranet/publi/2012/02/010054327.pdf</url></location><accessCondition type="restriction on access" displayLabel="Accès réservé">Accès réservé (Intranet de l'IRD)</accessCondition><recordInfo><recordContentSource>IRD - Base Horizon / Pleins textes</recordContentSource><recordCreationDate encoding="w3cdtf">2012-03-07</recordCreationDate><recordChangeDate encoding="w3cdtf">2012-08-30</recordChangeDate><recordIdentifier>fdi:010054327</recordIdentifier><languageOfCataloging><languageTerm authority="iso639-2b">fre</languageTerm></languageOfCataloging></recordInfo></mods></modsCollection>
