@article{fdi:010054093, title = {{C}omparison of morphological and genetic analyses reveals cryptic divergence and morphological plasticity in {S}tylophora ({C}nidaria, {S}cleractinia)}, author = {{S}tefani, {F}. and {B}enzoni, {F}rancesca and {Y}ang, {S}. {Y}. and {P}ichon, {M}. and {G}alli, {P}. and {C}hen, {C}. {A}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A} combined morphological and genetic study of the coral genus {S}tylophora investigated species boundaries in the {G}ulf of {A}den, {Y}emen. {T}wo mitochondrial regions, including the hypervariable {IGS}9 spacer and the control region, and a fragment of r{DNA} were used for phylogenetic analysis. {R}esults were compared by multivariate analysis on the basis of branch morphology and corallite morphometry. {T}wo species were clearly discriminated by both approaches. {T}he first species was characterised by small corallites and a low morphological variability and was ascribed to a new geographical record of {S}tylophora madagascarensis on the basis of its phylogenetic distinction and its morphological similarity to the type material. {T}he second species was characterised by larger corallite size and greater morphological variability and was ascribed to {S}tylophora pistillata. {T}he analysis was extended to the intrageneric level for other {S}. pistillata populations from the {R}ed {S}ea and the {P}acific {O}cean. {S}trong internal divergence was evident in the genus {S}tylophora. {S}. pistillata populations were split into two highly divergent {R}ed {S}ea/{G}ulf of {A}den and western {P}acific lineages with significant morphological overlap, which suggests they represent two distinct cryptic species. {T}he combined use of morphological and molecular approaches, so far proved to be a powerful tool for the re-delineation of species boundaries in corals, provided novel evidence of cryptic divergence in this group of marine metazoans.}, keywords = {{S}tylophora ; {G}ulf of {A}den ; r{DNA} ; {C}ontrol region ; {IGS}9 spacer ; {W}estern ; {P}acific}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}oral {R}eefs}, volume = {30}, numero = {4}, pages = {1033--1049}, ISSN = {0722-4028}, year = {2011}, DOI = {10.1007/s00338-011-0797-4}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010054093}, }
