@article{fdi:010054091, title = {{H}ydrolithon spp. ({R}hodophyta, {C}orallinales) overgrow live corals ({C}nidaria, {S}cleractinia) in {Y}emen}, author = {{B}enzoni, {F}rancesca and {B}asso, {D}. and {C}aragnano, {A}. and {R}odondi, {G}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}n {Y}emen, off the northwestern coast in the {G}ulf of {A}den, the coralline algae {H}ydrolithon rupestre ({F}oslie) {P}enrose 1996 and {H}. murakoshii {I}ryu and {M}atsuda 1996 have been observed to overgrow and kill living {P}orites lutea {M}ilne-{E}dwards and {H}aime, 1860. {S}imilarly, {H}ydrolithon onkodes ({H}eydrich) {P}enrose and {W}oelkerling 1992 and {H}. rupestre were observed overgrowing {S}tylophora pistillata ({E}sper, 1797). {C}ompetitive interactions between {P}. lutea and {H}. murakoshii were monitored from 2006 to 2009 at two sites and showed an average linear growth of 8.3 (+/- 1.9 {SD}) mm year(-1) over the coral. {T}he small polyps of {S}. pistillata and {P}. lutea combined with putative chemical compounds produced by {H}ydrolithon spp. are likely to allow the coralline overgrowth. {A}lthough corallines can locally kill coral tissues, the {CCA}/coral interactions do not seem to affect the overall live coral cover at the study sites.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{M}arine {B}iology}, volume = {158}, numero = {11}, pages = {2419--2428}, ISSN = {0025-3162}, year = {2011}, DOI = {10.1007/s00227-011-1743-2}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010054091}, }
