@article{fdi:010053585, title = {{I}rregular tropical glacier retreat over the {H}olocene epoch driven by progressive warming}, author = {{J}omelli, {V}. and {K}hodri, {M}yriam and {F}avier, {V}. and {B}runstein, {D}. and {L}edru, {M}arie-{P}ierre and {W}agnon, {P}atrick and {B}lard, {P}. {H}. and {S}icart, {J}ean-{E}mmanuel and {B}raucher, {R}. and {G}rancher, {D}. and {B}ourl{\`e}s, {D}. {L}. and {B}raconnot, {P}. and {V}uille, {M}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he causes and timing of tropical glacier fluctuations during the {H}olocene epoch (10,000 years ago to present) are poorly understood. {Y}et constraining their sensitivity to changes in climate(1) is important, as these glaciers are both sensitive indicators of climate change and serve as water reservoirs for highland regions(2). {S}tudies have so far documented extra-tropical glacier fluctuations(3,4), but in the tropics, glacier-climate relationships are insufficiently understood. {H}ere we present a {B}e-10 chronology for the past 11,000 years (11 kyr), using 57 moraines from the {B}olivian {T}elata glacier (in the {C}ordillera {R}eal mountain range). {T}his chronology indicates that {T}elata glacier retreated irregularly. {A}rapid and strong melting from the maximum extent occurred from 10.8 +/- 0.9 to 8.5 +/- 0.4 kyr ago, followed by a slower retreat until the {L}ittle {I}ce {A}ge, about 200 years ago. {A} dramatic increase in the rate of retreat occurred over the twentieth century. {A} glacier-climate model indicates that, relative to modern climate, annual mean temperature for the {T}elata glacier region was -3.3 +/- 0.8 degrees {C} cooler at 11 kyr ago and remained -2.1 +/- 0.8 degrees {C} cooler until the end of the {L}ittle {I}ce {A}ge. {W}e suggest that long-term warming of the eastern tropical {P}acific and increased atmospheric temperature in response to enhanced austral summer insolation were the main drivers for the long-term {H}olocene retreat of glaciers in the southern tropics.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{N}ature}, volume = {474}, numero = {7350}, pages = {196--199}, ISSN = {0028-0836}, year = {2011}, DOI = {10.1038/nature10150}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010053585}, }
